Last night I saw Regina Spektor! She was so freakin' good. Just wonderful. The audience LOVED her. I have never seen or heard an audience so crazy for the performer before. There was tons of screaming and people kept shouting things (I know this happens at most shows, but this seemed more extreme). There were a lot of people shouting "You're so beautiful!" and "I love you!" Someone else said, "I love your dress!" But my favorite was definitely "You're so smart!" After that remark, Regina and the audience started laughing. Then the guy added, "I really mean it!" which just made people laugh even more. Regina said, "I don't even know how to respond to that. I guess you don't if you're smart."
I tried to remember all of the songs, and I think I was actually successful because I found that someone else posted the setlist, and it's every song that I was thinking of -
The Calculation
Eet
Machine
Ode to Divorce
Two Birds
Folding Chair
Blue Lips
On the Radio
Dance Anthem of the 80s
Laughing With
One More Time With Feeling
Bobbing for Apples
That Time
Apres Mois
Human of the Year
Poor Little Rich Boy
Man of a Thousand Faces
Encore:
Samson
Us
Fidelity
Hotel Song
I didn't even try to take any pictures, but I did see a couple on Flickr. Here's one from last night:
Aw, so cute!
Regina played almost every song on her new album (she left off Genius Next Door and Wallet). She didn't talk much between songs, but she did say "thank you" a lot. She started laughing at one point and then explained it was because her setlist said "On the Patio." She was so adorable and seemed a little overwhelmed and surprised by how exuberant every one was. Her voice is amazing live. She played the piano for the majority of the show and had one guy on drums, another playing the violin, and a third playing cello. They left when she picked up the guitar to play Bobbing for Apples and That Time. She also played a keyboard(?) for Dance Anthem of the 80s. For Poor Little Rich Boy, I'm not even sure what she was doing. She was playing the piano with one hand, and then hit this weird thing and a chair with a drumstick in her other hand. It was great though.
I think you can tell from what I've written, that I thought it was an excellent show. I really had a good time. The one song that I was really hoping to hear was Consequence of Sounds just because that's the first Regina song that I ever heard, and it's still one of my top favorites. I wasn't really expecting her to play it though, so I wasn't disappointed. Even though I knew this tour was for her new album, I was kind of surprised by how many of the new songs she played. I was expecting her to mix it up more and play more of her older stuff. I have listened to her new album a few times, but I'm definitely more familiar with her older songs. I think it was good to hear the new songs live though because now I like them even more than before.
Oh yeah, I also want to mention the opening act - Little Joy. I had never heard of them until I bought my tickets for the concert. For some reason, I only thought that it was two people - Fabrizio from The Strokes and some woman - but there are a lot more people in the band. It took me a while to warm up to them, but I was definitely enjoying their music the more they played. I'll have to try and track down some of their songs and listen some more.
We were out so late. The opening band started at 8 and finished around 8:30. But Regina didn't come out until 9. She finished at 10:30, which sucked for us because we needed to take the train back home, and the last two train times were 10:40 and 12:40. We knew there was no way to catch the 10:40, so we just took our time exiting the theater, and then decided to walk to the station instead of catching a cab. There's a food court inside the station, and I was surprised that half of the food places were still open. We stopped at Mrs. Fields and got some Cookies 'n' Cream Chillers. Yummy. It really sucked waiting around, but the tasty shake helped a bit. I was so tired and decided to listen to my iPod and zone out on the ride home. There were a few drunk people on the train (which I was expecting) and my mom listened to them and later told me the funny stuff that they had been saying. Anywho, we finally got home just before 2 AM.
And while I'm talking about drunk people, there was also a drunk guy that sat behind us on our way to Chicago. He would periodically talk on this cell phone, and I would listen in every once and a while (I learned that he was on his way to the U2 show). One time, he said something like, "I know I've done some bad things, but I need to try and forgive myself. But I need you to forgive me too. It has to go both ways or it won't work." Then he later told this person, "I respect you SO much. More than anyone else. More than the God almighty - whatever he may be." The last thing I remember him saying was how he gets along with women better because they are just better and nicer people than men. Heh. I finally learned that he was talking to his dad because he ended the call by repeating, "I love you, Dad" a few times. This guy also kept randomly burping and bursting into song, but alas, I cannot remember what the heck he was singing. The whole time I kept thinking, "Of course! The drunk guy has to sit right behind me." Ah, drunk people.
