I look like a teenager?

Man, I'm tired - both physically and mentally. I had to do some volunteer work at a food pantry (it was a work thing - my co-workers and I all had to do it). I used to volunteer a lot when I was in college, and I would like to try to do some more volunteer work now, so it was nice to help out today. But it was really hard to make myself go this morning, and I was dreading it a bit. We had to be at the place by 8 A.M., so that meant I had to get up an hour earlier than I do for work and it was a Saturday, a day meant for sleeping in. When I came out of the bathroom after my shower, my dad was actually up, and he seemed so shocked that I was awake too and had already showered. I then had a some of my Chocolate Cake Shake for breakfast (leftover from dinner last night) and hit the road.

Once I got to the pantry, I felt awake and was ready to work. Laura and I were in charge of the grain section. I had to stand up the whole morning, and then a lot of times I'd have to get a little step ladder out to reach the cereal on the top shelves. I feel like I got a good work out with all of the bending and stretching I had to do. One woman was complimenting my cereal balancing skills and said something about how nice it was to see such a resourceful teenager helping out. I almost blurted out, "Hey, I'm not a teenager. I'm almost 25 years old for Christ's sake!" Instead, Laura and I just looked at each other and tried not to laugh. Oh well, I'm used to people thinking I'm much younger than I really am. I try to look at it as a positive instead of a negative. I think it's better to look younger than to look older than your age.

We also did this adopt a family thing at my work. We each got a child and had to buy presents for them (the last episode of 30 Rock hit close to home). Everyone got a list of things that the kids wanted. It was fun getting to shop for a little kid, which is something I haven't done in forever. I ended up buying my girl a barbie, an art kit, four books, and bubble bath. They were all on her list, so I hope she enjoys them. The presents were all dropped off yesterday. It's kind of weird that I'll never now how well/poorly they were received.

Last night I spent about four and a half hours going from store to store with my mom and sister looking for a new, fake Christmas tree. When I was little, we always got real trees, but ever since we got our dogs, we've been getting fake ones. We have one huge fake tree, but we really don't have the room for it now and it's such a pain to put together. After visiting a few stores, we decided that Menard's would be our last stop. We got lucky because they had a lot of nice, fake trees. We finally decided on one and then also bought a new tree topper and some ribbons for decoration. The plan is to put the tree together and then decorate later today, but I'm about ready to plop down on the couch and not get up for a couple of hours.

So, with the tree, volunteering this morning, buying presents for a kid I don't know, and attending an office, holiday lunch yesterday, I'm starting to feel more in the holiday spirit.

christmas, volunteering
