[He sighs, looking at the poem.]

Why do I sense pain in my future?  [A sigh.]  Damn it, this is just as bad as Nadia ever was...

Pain awaits everyone in their future one way or another. It's just part of existence.

I meant to thank you for helping me when I had amnesia the other week. Do you want anything to make up for it?

I guess to clarify that, pain in my immediate future. Apparently who ever sent the love letters didn't take my reaction kindly...

It was no problem, and nah, I'm good for the moment. Annoyed at being lamed for however long it takes to heal, but that's just how the coin lands.

Some people are like that...it's not your fault that you don't feel the same way back.

If you need anything then don't hesitate to call me.

[He sighs.]

I know it's just... 'once burned, twice shy'.

And if I think of anything, I'll contact you first.

[He nods.]

I know the feeling. Give it some time.

I'm glad. I hope you get well soon.

I've wondered, Shiro. Is it just me, or does it seem that with most of us, even the ones who shouldn't, that we're recovering far faster then we ought? Even from things like this?

[Because it would make sense that the ghosts would want their prey as active as possible, and being laid up for too long with wounds and just bored wouldn't be of much use to them.]

I...am not entirely sure. I haven't noticed. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for it now that you've mentioned it though.

But, maybe that's one of the effects here?

It might be. After all, if we're laid up too long, we're not useful to them.

The sad thing is I think that's highly probable.

It does seem as though we are merely here for these being's amusement. Once we're no longer amusing we get sent away.

Not always perhaps...

[Hayden thinks.]

Perhaps it's more like a Dungeon and Dragons game to them, or something similar. Pieces brought in, discarded in favor of others, or traded to someone else for a more desirable piece. That, or a kind of living lab rat experiment.

That....really doesn't surprise me either. As of yet we're unsure to their intent but for now this is the most believable theory.

If that's the case I'm not sure whether I prefer the idea of being a pleasing lab rat or being a displeasing one.

[After all, he knows what scientists do to the failed subjects..]

Well, since what little we know indicates they most likely just throw people back? I don't know myself.

We can't know until we observe more. Or even we see it for ourselves. We can't know unless we're in their mind or gain an insight.

True, so until then, we stumble about in the dark, hoping for a break.

I think that's what we've been doing anyway. We're just a little more savvy about how we go about it.

Perhaps. Though the ghosts seem to be enjoying tormenting us.
