Brian's Big Comedy Weekend Day Four

Jun 01, 2008 12:52

This weekend at Gypsy could have gone better.  I only did $30 in DVD sales, so combined with what I got for the gig itself, I walked out with $180.  Well, better than nothing.  I'm hoping to walk out of Sidesplitters with $250 tonight for their Stand-Up Showcase contest.  Wish me luck.

Thanks to everyone who came out and showed their support.  Will, sorry I didn't get to see more of you.  It was great hanging for the short time that we had, and thanks for making the beds before you left.  George and Nikki seem really cool.  Nick and Kev, thanks for coming out... sorry the crowd kinda sucked dick.  We'll get together legitimately sometime soon.

I did three shows this weekend at Gypsy, and I recorded every single one.  Not one of them is useful as an audition tape.  The crowd sucked on Thursday and Saturday, and on Friday, I had to deal with hecklers way too much.  And in all three I probably cursed more than I could have gotten away with.  I don't know, maybe I'm paranoid about it.  The point is, I don't have a new audition tape like I thought I would have after this weekend.  I also don't have material for my new DVD.  I don't know when I'm going to be able to record that, honestly.  You see, recording a demo tape or a CD or DVD for comedy is not at all like recording a rap or rock demo.  You don't need an audience for the latter.  If you fuck up, you can't just stop in the middle of it, go back and do it again.  You have to get a good crowd that's willing to laugh, and you have to plow on through, start to finish, mistakes or no mistakes.

So what I was thinking of doing was taking this Summer to

1.  Lose a lot of weight.  Some comedians can pull off the look of having some extra pounds.  I can't.  Also, I'm self-conscious.

2.  Work on the comedy website with Bill and Mike.

Then, in the Fall, organize a show at UNF and pimp the living Hell out of it.  Advertise, advertise, advertise.  Fill that whole room with people and do 40 minutes to an hour.  I could have Mike, Dallas and Chris do five minutes each to bring me on and then I do forty or fifty minutes.  Then, at a later show, switch it up and have myself, Mike and Chris do five and then we bring out Dallas, who does forty to fifty.  Then we have Chris do forty to fifty for the next show.  Yes.  Yes, this will work.
