Time for a quick update, since i haven't posted in quite a while. Not much has really gone on since my last update.
I've been reading a lot about the Massachusetts' government's decision to move to the OpenDocument format. This means that all documents that are produced with this format will be in an open format that is readable by anybody and that any Office product that can also view/edit these documents just fine. This eliminates the reliance upon Microsoft Office and allows people to use other systems with other office products if they wanted to. Of course, Microsoft doesn't like this because current MS Office and the upcoming Office 12 do not support this format and it will effectively take business away from them. However, the OpenDocument format standard is freely available for any to implement which means that if MS truly cares about cares about their customer base, they could implement it. The only thing is that it keeps people from being "locked in" to MS Office and allows the user to choose the office suite that they want. Ironically enough, some of MS Office's competitors (OpenOffice.org, Sun's StarOffice, KOffice, and plenty of other office suites) ALREADY support OpenDocument, so, Microsoft, I guess it's time to get on the ball and, for once, play catch-up, with the rest of the office suite market.
SCO vs IBM.. hahahaha.. SCO keeps shooting itself in the foot. And still, almost 2 full years after originally bring the lawsuit against IBM for copyright/patent infringment in Linux they have not produced a single iota of proof, there has been a lot of handwaiving and "hey, look over there.." attempts to produce something out of nothing.
If you're interested in either the Massachusetts decision (or interested in OpenDocument at all), or in the SCO v IBM case, a good place to start would be
Groklaw.
I've been working on a new design for my website (
natator.com) which is nice, clean, and simple. Although the new design is not live yet, look for it within the next week or so. It will be XHTML 1.0 and CSS strict compliant. Meaning that it should, theoretically, look the same in all browsers and platforms.
Work is work. HomeNet is awesome, I'm starting to get into more in-depth projects instead of doing only the day-to-day website work (although I still do that too).
In the sports arena, quite a bit has been happening lately.
The Philies' season has come to an end, finishing, 1 game away from the wild card spot in the playoffs and missing the playoffs for the 12th straight season. However, I'm pretty satisfied with the team this season. Almost EVERYBODY had their major contributions, and almost everybody on the team is a threat to "go yard." The pitching was pretty solid throughout the season, but, had some slumps as well.
The Eagles are doing ok at 3-1 currently. We eeked out some wins against opponents we shoulda crushed, but, the NFL is like that, even the "crappy" teams aren't THAT bad. With McNabb and his sports hernia, and Akers out with a torn hamstring, and now Grasmanis is out too, I hope we can hold things together and keep on winning.
The Flyers regular season starts tomorrow. They look like a force to be reckoned with. A strong preseason was a good sign of things to come. We have Forsberg who is quite possibly the best center in the league, Simon Gagne, Keith Primeau, Brashear, Esche and Nittymaki in goal, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and a few other "youngens" we are loaded, and, I believe a threat for the Stanley Cup Finals this year.
