Life has been a bitch recently. Here's a general recap of the past week or so:
--Early Sunday morning my aunt passed away. My uncle, who has never been particularly good with money, is now by himself. His step-daughter was in charge of his and my aunt's social security checks and my mom, and I think my cousin too, seem to think that she's been skimming money off the top. Not only that but her house is being foreclosed on right now. Do you really want to trust someone with your money whose house is being taken away for lack of payment AND at one time in her life has said "when mom dies I'll make sure you get nothing." I'm sure things have been mended somewhat but I have a long memory.
--On Saturday a driver came into my lane, nearly hit me head on as we both were going 50 mph (80 kph), and ran me into the ditch. I'm okay and haven't had any injuries other than a headache on Saturday and a sore neck that feels like I was headbanging to too many Metallica songs. The car, however, might be a different story. Just by looking at it there doesn't look like there is a ton of damage. The front passenger wheel was pushed back into the wheel well a bit and should cost a decent amount. My mom got a call from the insurance company yesterday (why one person call MY cell, and the other called THEIR HOUSE phone, I don't know) and they told her they wanted to total it. My mom argued with them, which is what I would have done, and told them no way. The mechanic/tower who towed me is going to give me an estimate today and I hope it will be much less than what the insurance company quoted. If not, I guess I'll be hunting for a new car that will cost between $2000-3500, depending on what those schmucks will give me.
--I try to enjoy all the little things in life, even under all these circumstances. This weekend was not a good one for that because ALL of my football teams lost. Yep. Tenino High lost to Forks (and the vampires and werewolves), WSU lost to Notre Dame, Seahawks and Packers lost, and both of my fantasy football teams lost. The only plus in all of that is Brett Favre won, but he had to beat the Packers in doing so.
--Last Thursday I swore one of the students smelled like pot so I started watching him like a hawk. When we got back from the weight lifting room I walked through the locker room extra slow to try to see or hear anything suspicious. Nothing. When he came out of the locker room he was arguing with another student. He then said to me, "Monty, when can a cop legally search you?" So now sirens and lights are going off in my head. Before the next period started I was about to sneak away to the office to talk with the vice principal but he ended up coming into the gym looking for someone else. I told him my suspicions and he told me he'd search him. At the end of the school day he was in the office with the a police officer and I knew I was right. Before the volleyball game there was actually THREE police cars here.
According to my Mom, who had heard more about this whole thing from one of the kids friends who goes to church with my parents, the boy had stolen $1000 from his dad ($800 still on him) had quite a bit of pot, and snitched on several people from the area including Olympia, Yelm, and possibly Rainier. I told my mom that "nobody likes a rat and he'll get butt-raped in jail." She said "yeah, probably." To that I about died of laughter... old Mom is way cooler than younger Mom.
--The last volleyball was last Thursday as well. The Varsity team needed a win against Rainier to force a playoff game against Rainier again five days later. If they won that game they then had a play-in game against the other division's bottom seed to see who gets the final spot in districts. At that point they would play Onalaska who is #3 overall in state. It was a CRAZY scenario... but it didn't happen. They won the first game and then dropped the next three. We had no answer for their middle blocker and, frankly, we looked flat and it was clear that Rainier wanted it more.
My Junior Varsity team, well we took care of business! We started the season 2-7, we close in almost all of our games, and even had a little in-fighting int he middle of the season. Then something finally clicked. We ended our season 4-1 and I couldn't be prouder and happier with them and their effort. My favorite moment of the season came when we needed one point to win the match and we weren't serving particularly well that game. I had a double switch with Alex playing front row and Adri in the back row. Both are not my best servers and I usually split their serve time or go with the hot hand. When the spot came up to serve I looked down the bench at Adri and said "can you serve?" She nodded and said yeah, so I threw her in there. She made that serve and we won the match. It was incredible. Hell, I get a little choked up thinking about how proud I am of her and all of my players!
--My first class of the day is just about to walk in. Peace out homies.
I missed my death by about 10-20 feet on Saturday by nearly being hit head on at a combined speed of 100 miles per hour. It's good to be alive and I love you all tons. Remember what Rivers Cuomo said in the new Weezer song: "Love is the answer, you have got to trust in the World." HAH! Nerdy? Yes... but remember that things can always be worse.
