I'm caught somewhere between the romanticism of changing the world into a better more humane place and the reality of a very bleak future. This part of the economy is failing, that part of the banking sector is screwed, america fucked us on the financial/housing front. Automotive executives are getting shit loads of money as a reward for horribly mismanaging their companies, and i'm bustin my balls tryin to pay down my student loan.
Question number 1)
Why GIVE GM/Chrysler 4Billion to 'stay afloat' when what they really need is someone to buy their products? As a country currently 'at war' with someone... wiht our LAV 3's getting shot out, or blown out from beneath our soldiers, why not A) have them manufacture more of those (not only do they cost a couple million a piece, but they will keep the workers occupied for a while, hopefully till this blows over), and B) have them engineer a new model, ready for production. Instead of feeding them dollars, give them something to do. This way we actually get something out of it. Same thing with Boeing, Bristol, Magellin (SP?). We desperately need new fighters, we dont have ANY dedicated bombers, our heavy lift helicopters are the laughing stock of NATO, (we sold them to the Dutch in the late 90's and bought them back again 6 months ago). fuckin idiots.
Furthermore. Why not let the god damn industry go belly up. Wait for them to lay off whatever amount of workers, then nationalize an automotive company, rehire them at more preferable (normal) wages, and create something uniquely canadian. Make it affordable, durable, and disposable. All proceeds go into tax revenue, allow for private dealerships, etc etc. this is a cash farm waiting to happen. it worked in the 30's... COUGH.
furthermore. people are freakin out about job losses. BUILD WIND FARMS AND SOLAR PANELS!!!!! Create more eco-friendly transportation, improve public transit everywhere. The east coast is hurting, and our navy is falling apart. we need destroyers/cruisers, and we need at least 3 air craft carriers to take care of our coastline and our NATO obligations. that would keep those guys busy for at least 14 years. create billions in tax revenue, and resupply our aging 'force'. (AT THE END OF WWII, WE HAD THE 3RD LARGEST NAVY IN THE WORLD... behind only Britain and the US)

nationalize all essential services (gas, heat, hydro/electric, etc) and put people to work. Deal directly with the natural resource companies, regulate them, tax them fairly, and encourage SMART development.
build an economy, dont wait for some private investor to do it for you. government should be run like a benevolent business, or a non-profit organization. provide the people the means to survive, tax them on it, and give them something out of it, instead of wasting money throwing it at people that are already too fuckin stupid to make anything good come of it.
just my thoughts.
Fascism is looking appealing right now. and that bothers me.
Good night
