Almost one year ago I ended up in hospital for about a week with severe burns to my right hand after accidentally splashing hot oil from a wok across it. I was extremely lucky; in surgery the doctor determined I didn't need skin grafts (they weren't sure prior) and the skin on my hand recovered extremely well - most people can't tell that I had burned my hand at all.
On discharge, I was told of all the things to expect; fragile skin for months, pain associated with burns, requiring gloves to protect my hand from swelling and UV lights, needing to moisturise my hand frequently, etc. One thing I was not warned about was how much my hand would hurt as the weather got colder.
While the weather has begun to cool down in the past few weeks, today the air has been very chilly, and by early evening my hand was so sore from the cold. Guess who's going to be wearing gloves inside from now on, even with the heater on, to stop the ache? I might grizzle a little about the pain, but knowing how bad it could have been... I am grateful because if I didn't have pain, it'd mean the nerves on the back of my hand were gone.
