And people wonder why some professional authors hate fanfic.
This post is in part for anyone who's not aware of the controversy and in part so I can vent. YMMV
Every time I hear about another person who's bought 50 Shade of Grey part of me wants to curl up and die. Or point them towards an archived copy of the original fanfic1, a breakdown of the changes from the fanfic, link to the wank in early 2011 before 50 Shades became a popular title2 and a dramatic reading of the tampon scene.
I'm all for fanfic writers to who want to move on into publishing their original works, but this ongoing trend of writing fanfic, filing off the serial numbers then publishing it as original fic is not okay. I feel for the authors out there who write original fic, do it well and have to deal with reject letter after reject letter, especially when a book so badly written becomes the number one title sold around the world.
