So how was this year for everyone in terms of metal goodness? I enjoyed some great releases from Amon Amarth, To-Mera, The Sword, Axamenta and Suffocation. I also found some truly amazing shit this year I'd never heard before, like Windir, Vader, Ghoul, Asmegin, Moonsorrow, Metal Church, and Destroyer 666. I heard Agallochs new album was pretty ( Read more... )

It's been a good year, but I don't know about "great."

I'm starting to like Amon Amarth again since they decided to stop being boring.

We had a lot of classic bands (i.e. Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Celtic Frost, My Dying Bride etc.) put out some good albums, but like someone said in ultimate_metal, they're nothing that I'd put alongside some of the output of their respective golden years...except maybe Napalm Death's Smear Campaign which, alongside The Code is Red, serves as some of their best material to date.

Other albums that came out this year that were pretty decent:

Daylight Dies: Dismantling Devotion
Harvey Milk: Special Wishes
Jesu: Silver
Black Cobra: Bestial
Enslaved: Ruun
Unearthly Trance: The Trident
Envy: Insomniac Doze
Converge: No Heroes
Cretin: Freakery (Can't wait for that Citizen record!)
Regurgitate: Sickening Bliss
Fucked Up: Hidden World
Skitsystem: Stigmata
Woven Hand: Mosiac
Melvins: (A) Senile Animal
Blut Aus Nord: Mort
Om: Conference of the Birds
Negura Bunget: Om
Intronaut: Void
Axis of Advance: Purify
Saprogenic: Ichneumonid (shameless plug)
Goatwhore: A Haunting Curse
Coffins: The Other Side of Blasphemy

I've yet to check out that Death Breath album, but I've heard good things. Shit, there's a ton more albums I'm forgetting.

You know what? Maybe this was a pretty good year for metal afterall.

Daylight Dies, Goatwhore, and Enslaved's releases where enjoyable.

I also discovered Pan-Thy-Monium this year, and I can't say that has been a bad experience for me.
