I'll expand the reason behind "do" instead of the lame assed "try"
When you say, "I am doing" or "being something" you wont bother with the things you think you'd like to do but really aren't that invested in.
if you are saying, "try" you probably aren't all that into it. That's why the 2nd question posed by Kailleen comes up, "What did you try and fail?"
Any time you try you are doing nothing.
