That is a common problem. Until you get experience at finding the tail, expert househunters recommend bringing very a large salt shaker and just covering the whole house to make sure you get the tail.

However, recent studies have found that many novice househunters, following the above advice, wind up startling the house before any salt gets on its tail. These studies have been widely trumpeted by House Salter Services, which, for a nominal fee, will send their House Salter to salt the house you're interested in. It's essentially a fire engine, but it's filled with seawater; a couple of passes with the hoses, and the house is all salty.

Some houses, though, have learned to recognize an approaching House Salter, and so House Salter Services has started offering the House Salter Deluxe: a firefighting seaplane which dumps a large quantity of seawater on the house from above. So far, the House Salter Deluxe has never failed.
