So today my political science class discussed the redevelopment of the theocracy in Iran in the late 70s, and things that changed between the reigns of Shah I/II and the government that took its place when Shah II was ousted. It was... really awkward-not because of the content itself, but because my teacher got really weird about talking about contraceptives.
I mean, we were discussing ways in which conditions got objectively worse for women after the re-establishment of the theocracy, and she listed mandatory veiling and the segregation of public spaces, and then she was like "I'm sorry, I have to write it," and she sent this really awkward obvious glance at the crucifix on the wall near the door, and then wrote "Contraceptives" on the board. Evidently contraceptives were banned, which is like... a fact?
LMU is a religious school, so it doesn't really surprise me that professors have religious views. I guess I just wasn't really expecting them to show up in my comparative politics class. It just made things weird and uncomfortable.
Also she made a joke about how Tang and Pop-tarts are "poor people food" and I was like, brah, I drank Tang and ate Pop-tarts as a kid and I'm middle class... WHATEVER. She was like "I'll never eat Spam or Pop-tarts those are poor people food" and I was like okay ma'am.
BUT OTHERWISE LIFE IS GOOD I GUESS. We had a reading comprehension test in Chinese today and I was surprised by how fully I understood the text. I mean, granted it was only a couple of paragraphs and the subject matter wasn't terribly complicated, but whenever I come to the realization that I actually know/recognize 200+ characters, it surprises me.
