I'm not really religious, but please help me pray for both Koreas right now in light of this most recent military skirmish, the lives lost, and those who are endangered by North Korea's shelling and threats ( Read more... )

lol when i got the alert for this i freaked a little bit. this has the potential to be a massive international incident bit it may not necessarily be. it depends a lot on china's reaction and what the white house ends up saying about it tomorrow.

The atmosphere in Seoul is evidently a sense of having seen it all before, evidently. But at the same time, the USFK commander is clearing his schedules for the week, so they're obviously taking it seriously... I just want to know how it's going to develop.

Exactly. And wasn't there an attack on a sub earlier this year, north on south? I read on CNN's post about it, but it was in the comments section so ymmv commenters there are completely bugshit.

the thing that is different about this, though, is the civilian injuries. CNN reported only two (as of 2:43 haven't checked back since then) but any civilians getting harmed at all could trigger something a lot bigger. I'm interested to see what Beijing has to say about it -- if anything. if they're smart imo (and don't want to start WW3) they'll keep their heads down.

the life (? if there's not more) lost is fucking sad though. wtf, i am still wondering what even caused this exchange of fire.

So far MBC is reporting 14 injuries and one casualty, two civilian injuries and the rest military.

Yeah, I was actually in Seoul when SK officially accused NK of sinking that sub. It was definitely a politically tense time, but nothing like this scale :\ Beijing has already released an official statement to the effect of "We're monitoring the situation and are extremely concerned".

I had to stop editing this post because I went to sleep, but afaik the situation is at a standstill and people in Seoul are basically treating it like "been there, done that." What I anticipate is that it's just another example of North Korean saber-rattling and that it won't amount to anything serious.

I hope you're okay though, bb ♥

Yeah, politically it's tense... China and Russia have issued formal statements but the U.S. hasn't yet, though Obama is going to meet with President Lee very soon. I think the general consensus thus far is that it's basically just North Korean showboating, and that it won't really amount to anything provided no more attacks take place.
