i don't have a horse in this race, but there're two deeply annoying trends (be it here or with the whole 'sterek' bruhaha in teenwolf):
1) creators who obviously, obviously, obviously slashbait the fanbase and then become baffled and offended when audience, you know, requires a promised payoff. coupled with moaning of sacred nature of "male friendship" - as if the whole bromance buddies shtick wasn't present in mainstream media since forever, while you can count the number of canons with homosexual couples in mainstream media on one hand, and probably wouldn't need all of your fingers
( ... )
re 1): The twit explicitly said: "“Sherlock” itself plays with the idea that society is so unused to any kind of male friendship or intimacy that those around Sherlock and John often assume their relationship can only be motivated by sexual attraction."
Meaning that not only they created a relationship dynamic that could be explained by sexual attraction, but they had foreseen this explanation, even counted upon it - because you cannot play this game without a partner.
Making the whole "oh i never thought it could come to this" rather hypocritical.
yup, hence point 2. - oh these silly people, darling to think that gay protagonists can be anything but a joke, let's laugh at them and be surprised. which, bleh.
Surprisingly neutral article with more or less rational comments that discuss valid points of slash fiction.
BTW, i also learned today that under CCA (Comics Code Authority) depiction of LGBT characters was prohibited until 1989. This was mindboggling; the whole history of CCA is, but this factlet - just WHAT?!
good article! i love the slow shift of opinion, and hope it continues, despite people being dicks.
i'd be more surprised if, you know, we wouldn't be passing federal level laws prohibiting 'open approval of homosexualism' nowadays. 1989, 2013, meh - some people always going to be small and evil.
