The SUV myth

A new Penn study has found that popular sport utility vehicles (SUVs), despite their size and weight, do not provide a safer ride for children.

Dennis Durbin, an assistant professor of pediatrics and epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, studied data on nearly 4,000 children injured in car crashes and found even though SUV's greater weight is protective, that advantage is canceled out by the vehicles' propensity to roll over. As a result, Durbin says, SUVs provide no distinct advantage. “What we were simply trying to do is question the assumption that we believe many people have: That if they choose an SUV, their family will be safer," Durbin says.

The SUV research is the latest finding from the Partners for Child Passenger Safety Project, a collaboration of Penn, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and State Farm Insurance that does ongoing research on child safety in cars. Headed by Durbin and fellow Penn researcher Flaura Koplin Winston, the study is the largest of its kind in the world.

I used to drive a Ford Explorer, and my mom used to drive an M-class. Glad those days are long gone. And in the age of dollar-a-litre gas, you'd think that more people would be warming up to saving money rather than letting the entire neighbourhood know how small your penis is without needing to whip it out.
