Word came that General Lee had waved the white flag at Appomattox, surrendering the cause to the Union Army, thus delivering the Confederacy back into the care of the North, a vengeful nursemaid to be sure.

I wish people could have changed opinions as easily as Connor did. It wasn't until the 1960s that this pairing was legal. The troubles they must have faced.

I don't think it was easy for Connor, but war changes people and I want to believe in this instance - and for other people who loved their families more than harmful societal norms - they would be willing to turn their backs on hate when their eyes were finally opened that black people were actually humans too. Abolitionists had to come from somewhere ( ... )

The end came as a pleasant surprise :) And you played with the emotions really well here. A nice read and you definitely can expand it into a novel.

Is that a nice way of saying it was too damn long? LOL!

No, I started writing and the story just kept coming. When I finished, I definitely was afraid it was way too long, but for some reason I had to tell this story.

So much detail here and such gorgeous writing! I loved the story in its fullness but it was certain lines that really leapt off the page. This one in particular - He was thrown heavenward and then he was unconscious. is a perfect example of the beautiful way you have with words.

Nice to arrive at a happy ending!

Thank you for reading this loooong entry. The length got away from me this week!
I was trying to fully convey Connor's surrendering the way he was brought up, his ideas of what makes a person a person, and the characterization took time :)
