in the lyric poem we discussed the course material, the lyre, muses, and it all tied together beautifully
like a christmas bow.
we listened to opera and put blocks of cedar wood on the heaters and it was quite a beautiful experience.

writing workshop went well. we did 10 minute free writes for "in my house, the rain says..." as well as a few other writing excersizes. there were a few action/mystery type guys, a few young adult fantasy fiction girls, girls with dyed hair that write "poetry", and a boy looking to write "what will be the most lucrative down the road." there's a boy that likes hawthorne and don delillo and writes in a tattered notebook and smokes cigarettes and drinks coffee. he seems smart and interesting and unamused.

my modern american poetry class is with the same teacher as my other poetry class. but, this class is full of all the older english majors who i see in the english department, chatting with professors and working in the writing lab. they know everyone and it's intimidating, but i think i will be able to hold my own. poetry reading is very different from novel reading. it's only once a week so we have around 15 poems to read and write about for each class. a LOT of work, but it will get done. i'll have to chip away at it a little bit every night.

i'm working on a short story about the "unbearable summer heat" and two young girls. it's postmodern and uneventful, but full of meaning. i'll post it at some point after some workshopping.

i finally feel like a writer, like a student, like a stylist and a lyricist.
i'm excited to do work, and eager to learn and share.

this is what i want to be and what i want to do.
i want to be a writer
and have all my friends love my books.
i want my kids to read them and be proud
and i want people to know my words
not my face.
