In Iceland, anyone can buy any kind of firework and they do. The result is fireworks going off all day on New Year's Eve. There's a short break around ten when the year end show comes on - a comedy program parodying the news and political events of the past year.

Unable to understand a word of it, I ducked outside and noticed that every TV I could see was tuned to the same broadcast. The fireworks had fallen silent and there wasn't a car in the streets or a reveller on the sidewalks. Just one American standing outside and waiting for things to shift back to the English bits.

After that, it was time to fill our pockets with cans of beer and head outside with our own fireworks. It was so cold that there was a layer of frost on the wooden picnic table.

When I was given safety glasses, I thought it was sort of funny until we were outside and the closer it got to midnight, the more fireworks were going off all around and directly overhead. I was briefly very tempted to hide under the picnic table. I do not recomend that any with PSTD visit Iceland at New Year. I had to comfort myself by quietly singing "The Star Spangled Banner" to myself.

It was amazing and I find that I must admit it kicked the ass of any 4th of July spectacular I've ever seen.

And today we slept until noon, had toast and coffee and are watching a political show on which the politicians are discussing the state of the economy and sipping glasses of beer. I've got to think that despite the current economic problems, Iceland will be just fine.
