Age/Appearance: Due to the numerous timejumps Hope made through her life it was hard to define how time passed for her. Years passed but the months weren’t numbered to the day. As such her age is speculated to be from 17-19, for the sake of Bete Noire I’m playing her out as 18, a good in between of the speculation and able to meet Bete Noire standards.

A defining attribute of Hope is her fiercely bright red hair. Where most redheads tend to be more of an orange-ish tint, Hope’s is a deeper red color. Her eyes are a bright green to match the red hair. She’s of paler skin, maybe even paler than most as most of her later life was spent in dystopic futures where the sun barely touched. She’s overly skinny due to being starved for most of her entire life, and until recently was malnourished because of it. She has some muscle tone, though, due to always fighting and training her entire life.

Personality:
One look at the sweet little red-head with the soft green eyes and most people take her for a sweetheart. It’s hard to understand that Hope is a soldier first, a teen second. Even talking to her a person might not get it, that while they’ve been talking the entire time she’s already planned out 7 escape routes while laughing over a shared joke.

Nathan trained Hope to survive. This eliminated a lot of talk of emotions. That’s not say Nathan squandered them, but rather would more just express their discontent at things rather than sit down and talk about things like love or try to resolve anger with long heart to hearts. Always they wore their emotions on their sleeves, expressing them and then letting them go. Nathan had a policy of absolute transparency with Hope. He never wanted her to distrust him, and she never did. Instead she took all of his lessons to heart.

Still, Hope is a teenager at heart. She has her moments of rebellion and those had cost her at times. She has her boiling points, though, and when pushed past them she can throw teenage fits. This is mostly out of stubborn refusal to concede, not that truly believes she’s always right. She just has to express herself.

She has the ability to read situations and adapt. This is part of her soldier training, but can be applied to social situations as well. If she meets someone who is kind and warmhearted, she’ll give that back. If someone is afraid, she’ll be soothing. If someone is hospitable, she’ll punch them in the face. It’s all about the moment for her.

When she’s your friend, though, she’s the most loyal friend you’ll ever have. She defends her friends lives with her very own and refuses to stay out of a battle while others battle for her. She’s always on the front lines, even when told to stay out of them. She values the lives of others above her own while everyone else values her life above theirs.

Hope also struggles with a lot of things. She keeps herself busy as a distraction, but there are many things that trouble and haunt her. The number of people who have died for her, the weight she carries on her shoulders as the mutant messiah, what she will do in the future, her father’s death. Hope carries a great weight with her. She’s either mutantkind’s savior or destroyer and that’s not an easy thing to heft around at 18. This has caused Hope to reject her destiny often, and embrace it later. It’s still a heavy burden, but she’s starting to realize that if it all does weigh on her, then she’s going to step it up and be the savior mutantkind needs. And she’d do anything to protect her fellow mutants.

Sexual Preferences/Orientation:
Being raised by what was considered one of the greatest soldiers that ever lived, the topic of emotions was pretty taboo to start with, especially as Nathan was raised to believe them to be weakness. The topic of sex was entirely off the table. With survival always being Hope and Nathan’s top priority, there wasn’t even a need for the sex talk. Even the word ‘puberty’ scared Nathan, and since there was never really a time for Hope to stop and fall in love with boys the ‘sex talk’ was really not needed.

That’s not to say that Hope hasn’t experienced what she defined as ‘love’ at the time, or a general interest in guys, but she was nine the first time which was silly kids’ love and the second case of interest is still budding. She knows, though, that when a man and woman are in love they do certain things specific to relationships (ie. kissing and the like), she just doesn’t know where it really goes from there.

That’s not to say she wouldn’t be open to it, though. Learning about it or experiencing it. It’s another of those things she never got to hear about but is really curious about.

All that aside, she does seem to only have an interest in men. Her first interest was when she was nine, and her second was just recently. Both times were guys, though, and so far she’s shown no hint the other way. So it’s safe to assume she’s straight, but that’s not to say a bit of experimenting would put her off. She’s usually open to the things she doesn’t understand or know.

Powers:
Hope is an Omega-Level Mutant. In X-Men history there have only ever been ten, her included, recorded Omega-Level Mutants (not to say there aren’t unrecorded ones), and there have been millions of mutants. Her powers have the potential to be the strongest of mutantkind.

Due to canon still not clearly defining her powers, this section is based on what she can do as of now in canon. As more of her powers are shown in canon, I’ll likely move her through the same changes just in Bete Noire. As such, she is still developing and at rest her powers are at a weaker stage. In times of heightened emotion, though, her powers come out to their fullest extent and can be either beneficial or catastrophic depending on the situation.

Power Mimicry: Vaguely like Rogue, Hope has the ability to take a person’s powers and use them. The difference is that Hope doesn’t have to be touching her subject to use the powers, and that when she does use them she utilizes them beyond the abilities of their original users and amplifies them to the level of a mutant of her power.

It’s still unsure if she can still use a power again once used, or how close she has to be to someone to use them. As of canon so far she’s shown a need to be really close to her subject to use their powers at her average moments, and can only duplicate them at the mutant’s power levels. If in heightened emotional state, though, she can utilize any mutant power she wants that she’s taken on, and use it beyond its strongest potential.

powers acquired so far
telekinesis and telepathy (from cable)
energy absorption and release (from bishop)
optic blasts (from cyclops)
transformation of flesh to steel (from colossus)
freezing with ice (still unclear if storm or iceman)
psionic armor (from armor)
electricity control (from storm or surge)
earth manipulation (from rockslide)
creation of organic matter (from kenji)

these are all powers she’s shone using and can possibly recall in heightened states of emotion again

Phoenix Force: This is still being explored in her canon. A cosmic entity of life and power, the Phoenix Form seems to be using Hope Summers as its next host, showing up as early as when she was a baby. Lately the Phoenix Force keeps making more and more appearances as Hope gets older and starts to grow into her powers. It’s seen reflected in her eyes during moments of intense fear or anger and has even spoken to her once, briefly, though she doesn’t know it was the Phoenix Force or what it means. This will develop as well.

Psychic Undetectability: Starting from birth, she destroyed all mutant tracking technology. Ever since she has been unable to be sensed by anyone tracking her as a mutant, at least psychically. Technology can still identify her on sight and read her power strength.

Power Manifestations: Her presence alone awoke five new mutant powers not there before in the teens, and their powers manifested abruptly and intensely. So intense, that they could not be controlled or maintained without Hope’s physical touch, which could possibly hint at her ability to link with mutants’ powers in general or her connection to the ‘Lights’, as the new mutants were called, specifically.

Hand-to-hand Combat: Trained by Cable, Hope is a skilled fighter. Better than most soldiers, really. She has average human strength, but she’s calculating like a soldier. She knows how to use a variety of weapons as well.

Weaknesses: Being so new to her powers, she’s still unable to fully utilize them. And when she does she tends to lose control due to these bursts of power come from heightened emotional states where she doesn’t think clearly to begin with. At rest, when mimicking someone’s abilities she exhausts herself. Depending on how long she uses the abilities and what the abilities are determines how long she’s out when she passes out.

Reason for playing:
Hope was one of those characters that I just couldn’t get enough of, surprisingly. Considering I was interested in a different character until I started to see more of Hope. Her upbringing mingled with her coming of age as a teenager and a mutant is the most intriguing story of marvel to me.

Bete Noire would make for an interesting place to play a girl who’s still developing. It’ll give her powers a chance to continue to develop just in a new setting with different conditions. It’ll be interesting to see how this could either hinder or quicken her powers developments based on the events of Bete Noire.

There’s also the intrigue of descent into sin. Hope is defined as either the savior of mutantkind or the destroyer of mutantkind. So far canon tends to learn towards the former, with Hope stepping up into that savior role more and more. It’d be interesting to slowly corrupt her and see her go the opposite direction.

5. Samples
First-Person:
I remember the taste of rats. They sucked. I hated them.

They were these fast, little pieces of shit that tasted tough and disgusting once you stripped them of their armor and fur. And even then they barely had anything on them. It almost wasn’t worth it. I say almost because when you haven’t eaten in two days, they do start to make your stomach growl on sight.

But that was life. Travelling. Hunting. Sleeping. Travelling. Scrounging. Sleeping. Travelling. Starving. Sleeping. And rats.

There was fire too. Sweet, warm fire. Someone thank the guy that came up with that one for me, please. We have time machines, it doesn’t sound so impossible to do, you know. Anyway, if it wasn’t for fire I think I might have gone hungry rather than eat one of those rats. Nathan always cooked them up just right. Telling me some soldier story or another (I never paid attention, just drooled over the smell of cooked rat) while turning the rat over an open fire.

Looking back on it… I miss it.

I think I miss rat too.

Third-Person:
No more.

She couldn’t take it anymore. The young mutant wandered aimlessly into the city, not even realizing she was approaching it until she looked back and realized where she’d come from was gone. Where was Utopia?

It was gone. Gone from sight. It was replaced with the view of the slums she’d been walking down without even realizing it. Dirty cities that looked like a dystopia. It wasn’t completely a completely degenerated and destroyed city, but it looked like the start of one. Like if she reached out and touched the brick it’d crumble beneath her fingers and there’d be nothing but dust and decay. Like she was on the brink of the future she’d dreaded ever seeing again.

No more, she almost cried at the thought of it. She couldn’t take it anymore if she was in that sort of world again. Scouring cities and fearing for her life. Being on the run. Trying to survive. Eating little. Sleeping little. Barely living. This looked like the start of that life again. This looked like her version of Hell, and she couldn’t take it anymore.

“Nathan.” The name escaped her lips in the voice of a small and lost child crying out to be found. To be taken away from this Hell.

Nathan’s not here, Hope reminded herself as the tears threatened to break free. She reached up and wiped them from her eyes. Now was not the time for tears. Now was not the time for Nathan. Win first, cry later. And in order to win, you had to survive.

With the thought of surviving strong in her head Hope took off running down the street, searching for her first stop on the road to survival in Bete Noire.

Third-Person #2:
Her dreams are unfamiliar to her. They’re so intense it unnerves her. She’s not sure what to do with the sudden intensity of what she feels.

It startles her into alertness, shocking her entire being as suddenly it’s not Emil’s face hovering over her but the darkness overcoming her sight as she wakes to deep breaths and unfamiliar warmth. Unfamiliar. That is the theme of tonight it seems.

Hope lays on her bed for long moments now, doing nothing but feeling herself as she stares at a white ceiling in a dark night. Her cheeks seem to burn almost, her whole body feels on fire. There’s the faint whisper of Emil’s touch caressing her skin that sends chills along her flesh and makes her whole body tingle with pleasure.

Then she closes her eyes with a soft sigh, giving into the hazy memory of the intense dreams. She recalls the way Emil’s kiss takes her very soul away, leaving her too light. She imagines him brushing his hand along her thighs again, her own hand coming to mimic the memory. She lets him guide her touch, teach her things she’s never thought of before. His hand touches a place she’s never given thought to before, but in the dream she likes it. She loves it.

So she tests this new experience herself. She lightly brushes her fingers along herself, she let’s Emil touch her in ways she never dreamed possible. She mimics his loving caresses and light teases until her body tenses with pleasure and a slight moan of want escapes her lips.

All the things she never knew.

REVISIONS:

ADDRESSING POWERS FIRST:

I am so sorry I neglected to mention this before. But as it is still unsure of whether it is only mutants powers or not she can mimic (since they say technically she may already possess the powers just needs to be near the mutant to draw on them), Hope will not be able to draw on powers from anyone in the game except maybe the two Marvel characters already in game. And yes, that would be at their discretion as well. Especially as the only time Hope ever purposely draws on another person's powers in canon is when she's trying to subdue someone who was too powerful for her to take one without matching their strength level.

As for amplifying above their power level: this only happens canonly whenever she loses control of her powers. She has no idea how to amplify powers or what her limits are, and I would not do something like that without proper mod discussion beforehand due to how rare it is that she does lose control that heavily without some severe prompting (ie. the death of her father and several friends in canon being the only time this happens).

Also, if she did absorb either of the Marvel character's powers, it would not be a permanent absorption because she's still unable to control that and understand how to make it permanent anyway, so Bete Noire wouldn't need to drain them since she can't do this in general anyway.

PHOENIX FORCE:

I entirely won't be using the Phoenix Force in game for the longest time, for the sole purpose of the Phoenix Force still being dormant within her and no one knows what it's up to yet. The only sign of the Phoenix Force with her will just be in her eyes at tense moments where she looks dangerous. But it won't result in a use of powers, just a hint that something's not all right with her.

If anything new comes to light in canon that I think might be pertinent/game-usable I will be sure to address it with the mods beforehand. Because even away from home, the Phoenix Force still wouldn't leave her. So if they reveal something about the Phoenix Force that can be used I'll discuss it with the mods first!

PERSONALITY:

For the early part of Hope's life her true identity was kept secret from her. Not through direct lies, but more like an omission of what's to come. Nathan did his best just to diffuse any questions about it and put it off for the future.

When Hope first realized she was a mutant she was excited about it at first. But when she first realized she was the mutant messiah she was scared. Hope doesn't feel special. In fact, until recently, she didn't even think she was a mutant due to the fact that her powers never manifested. Then finding out that people were dying for her to live, because supposedly she was meant to save an entire species of people, it sort of left her feeling inadequate. She doesn't know what people expect of her and she doesn't know what she can do to save them. She gets tired of people looking at her like she's about to perform a miracle at any second.

But at the same time her run in with the Lights started to show her that maybe she could make a difference. She doesn't know just how important she can or will be, but she knows that if she can help she wants to in any way that she can. She's still unsure of herself, but knowing that people need her it doesn't matter to her if she can or cannot live up to their expectations, she knows she just has to try. Nathan died for her to try.

Nathan's death, especially, is why she keeps busy. For the most part, Hope is able to put tragedies behind her and move on. For her it was always about surviving. That was what Nathan taught her. The two of them had to survive. She's been troubled by things in the past, especially deaths of those she's cared for, but she's always gone by 'Win first, cry later'. And with the need to always survive, with something always there to beat and 'win' at, she's never stopped to fully address what goes on inside of her head.

Hope's a mess in side. She has the weight of the world on her shoulders and the lives to back that up. People she has loved have died, she's seen the world destroyed, she's gone to hell and back again, because everyone expects her to be their 'messiah'. It's easy to forget all this when there's always a new mission and a new target to conquer and distract her. But without a distraction her mind heads to dark places. Without a goal to keep her happy and positive for, she retreats into the dark things she's experienced. Being so young, and now without Nathan to stop and rest with her and teach her how to deal, she doesn't quite know how to deal. It results in a turmoil of emotions erupting in anger and outbreak at others as well as breakdowns. She's not afraid to cry, but when she does finally stop to cry she's not sure how long it will take to stop.

With Bete Noire she'll try her best to keep herself active. First priority will be ensuring her survival (ie. a job, a home, food, etc.). Once she's done that, she'll start to take on the hero role she's been bred into. Her whole life was about living for others, and even though she doesn't have mutantkind to protect, Bete Noire has it's fair share of problems. Once her survival's ensured, she'll take on any manner of mission to help protect Bete Noire, no matter how dangerous. Because that's what she feels she owes to all the people who died for her. For her to be the messiah they died for. And to do that she has to protect lives, regardless of whether they're mutants or not, because a fair share of humans have died for her as well.
