One man went to mow...

I find mowing lawns to be oddly therapeutic and in some ways I feel that mowing lawns represents many aspects of life itself. A bit odd I know, but consider this;

You start up the mower, most of the time it starts up fine but sometimes there is some difficulty and other times it will not start at all. Once you have got the mower started you get moving, the ground is not perfect; there are some bumps, but nothing you can’t handle. Every so often a condensed series of bumps, or even just one big bump, knocks you off course, but, if you try, you can get yourself back on track. Sometimes a tree looms up and you have to duck to avoid its branches, occasionally you are too absorbed in making sure you are mowing straight and you hit your head; there’s nothing you can do but swear a bit and continue.

Often you try mowing too fast, or there is just too much grass and the blades get caught up and the engine cuts out. Then you have to get down on your knees and scrape away all the grass from the blades before standing up again and restarting the engine, continuing on your way, if you are sensible, a little slower than before. Sometimes you are lucky and you hear the engine begin to falter and, if you have enough sense, you take this opportunity and slow down before things grind to a halt.

Unfortunately, sometimes it rains, the ground becomes soft and the grass thickens and sticks together and progress is difficult. In the worst cases it has been raining since you started, or at least it feels like it, other times you are well on your way before the sky clouds over and the rain begins to pour. Often you keep going, pushing through the sodden ground and hoping for the rain to stop, but sadly sometimes the rain is simply to hard and you give up and turn the mower off, leaving your job unfinished.

However, if you keep going, ignoring the rain, staying in a straight line and avoiding most if not all of the trees, you finish, and, with your fuel running low and your engine beginning to shudder, you can look back on a job well done.

I have thought way to much into this, and it came out a bit soppy and poetic, but there you go. Maybe all that time I have to think whilst mowing the lawn isn't that good for me after all...
