The follow up event. More space adventures!

And so we come to the follow up, because of course there needs to be a follow up. Always. Give me more! MORE! Ehum... Right. Anyway, really good prologue again, bringing up that it is the aftermath of war, setting up the plotlines of the Phalanx, and telling us what Peter "still not Star Lord" Quill has been up to and where he is at the start of this story. Also the new Quasar, Phyla-Vell and Moondragon have their plotline set up, and it's all very intriguing and interesting. Nova only shows up off panel, and the Wraith dude who got his own tie in does not show up in the prologue, but it had enough to set up anyway.

Nova #1-7
Okay the first issue, was really just good emotional stuff. Just Nova flying around space trying his best to save everyone and doing everything on his own, and being damn impressive as he does it too. So good to have more of Richard and the Worldmind bantering. I just really liked it.

Then there were two unrelated issues where he went to Earth, and while I was all for him having some down time... Wow, every single page had me going "Richie please leave earth now. Please go back to space."

The Civil War storyline is still taking place? Or has taken place? I don't know. I don't care. Here's my impression of Richard and Tony Stark's conversations. It is not accurate, except for when it is:

Nova: "So there was this galactic war that wiped out who knows how many planets. The loss of life was incalculable "

Tony Stark: "Ah, yes, yes, intergalactic war, now about this registration act. We're gonna need you to register your superhero identity and real identity"

Nova: "Did you not hear me? There were unstoppable spacebugs, galactus was turned into a weapon, Thanos is dead"

Tony Stark: "Yes, well, that's nice but we have problems here too you know. You see there are superheroes who doesn't agree with me and don't want to register their identities with the government."

Nova: "I've been through hell and back, I've seen too many people die now, but we won because we could all join together and together we could fight off Annihilus"

Tony Stark: "That's probably a nice message and all, but we need to fight other superheroes because... Because of reasons."

Nova: "Did you at least get the warning about Annihilus I sent?"

Tony Stark: "Nope, nobody is taking you seriously enough. Besides, what threats could possibly come from space? We are dealing with people who doesn't trust the government to keep their identities safe! We have to force them to comply!"

I don't know. I just. Felt that perspective was needed. Massive cosmic threat that tried and came super close to wiping out the entire universe, seems a bit more important than the so called heroes of earth fighting each other.
That is all I'm going to say, I'm not going to bloody read the Civil War story line. I like my heroes to get along and not fight each other.

I also could not stand how Nova was being treated by the public in general, or basically anyone coming in contact with him. I get that he's not going to start shouting from the rooftops, but uh, the dude is dealing with some serious mental health issues after seeing the entire Nova corps decimated along with so many other lives lost. He's also a fucking hero who took down the biggest threat to the universe. I'm not saying they should build him a statue or anything, but... Maybe don't treat him like a criminal either? Especially seeing as he wasn't on earth for any of the shit going down there!

Oh, and his father's treatment of him? Really fucking shitty and it made me angry as hell.

Okay, so that was the first three issues. #4-7 didn't really hook me either, but at least these tie into the event at large. I um, adored Ko-Rel for the short time she was in this, I think it was a waste to kill her. Richard really needs the assistance.

Oh, but the whole "why aren't you screaming bit"in the seventh issue? Really well done. Brainwashing is quite possibly one of the scariest things ever, and this type had a particularly scary twist in that not only were they sort of aware that they were being controlled, they actually felt as if they WANTED to be controlled like that. Scary stuff.

Oh, well, the Nova issues will continue as I carry on reading but I thought I might as well write about the mini series tie ins now that I've finished those and before I dive into the main Conquest issues.

Annihilation: Conquest Quasar #1-4
This is my favorite! Kick-ass lesbian couple on a mission! One of them turns into a dragon! Possibly permanently. It is amazing! Also the art is gorgeous. DRAGON! Phyla-Vell is along with Richard Rider my new favorite character. I love and adore her. She is awesome, but also insecure and she has to live up to the legacy of not only one superhero but also her father and brother who were Captain Marvel, and I just. Fuck I love that so much. The character who has to step into someone elses role and hope that they can make them proud with their actions. I just. Guh. So good.

And did I mention there is a dragon?! Moondragon turns into an actual dragon! And it doesn't change their relationship one bit, because their mental connection is all the intimacy they need and it is so good! I enjoyed these four parts so much I never wanted them to end.

Their quest was to find the savior and I pretty much guessed correctly who it would be thanks to the fact that I had read all those Thanos and Adam Warlock stories. And also Adam Warlock had to show up sooner or later I figured.

I want more of this amazing power couple, but I'm afraid to look anything up because I'll probably find out that either both or one of them are dead, or that they don't have an ongoing series where they travel around in space having amazing adventures.

Annihilation: Conquest Wraith #1-4
Okay, so I don't really have anything to say about this one. Not because I thought it was bad. It's not, it's good. There's just nothing too spectacular to comment on.

No wait, there's one scene. Where Ronan is freed from the Phalanx influence and he regrets everything he's done and begs the wraith to kill him and he says that death would be for a coward and that the path of redemption is the hardest way. Which just makes me squee "redemption arc!" which is also something I love. That bit I really liked.

Annihilation: Conquest Starlord #1-4
Well hello there, Starlord is it? Peter Quill's "I am 3000% done with all of this shit" attitude is amazing. Although that may just be the final page of issue four, but really it's just great.

These were perfectly okay, I liked Gabe in the last issue, before that we was kind of boring. Though of course his guilt over killing someone who was technically on his own team, was at least a bit emotional.

This one's sort of odd reading after watching the movie. Groot is surprisingly talkative. X)

I do find this team to be intriguing and interesting though, so I look forward to seeing more of them.

Aaaaand now for the main event... And more Nova issues. ;p

Annihilation: Conquest #1-6, Nova #8-12 & Nova Annual

I had no fucking clue that Ultron was going to be the big evil bad guy behind it all! The fucking coincidence was too good! Especially since I've also been watching The Avengers: Earth's mightiest Heroes the animated show on Netflix and it had a ultron plotline. So I've now seen the evil robot twice and I'm watching the Avengers movie on Thursday. So much Ultron. He? It? It's everywhere!

Anyway... Gosh the Nova issue where he's at the edge on space in this little community living in a huge decapitated head of some sort of being was the best thing ever. It had a telepathic dog! Named Cosmo! It was a Russian dog! All his dialogue had a Russian accent. He was adorable and the best thing ever! I loved him. And he's the chief security officer, and it was almost like a murder mystery but in space! It was amazing.

Nova's quest to find a cure was pretty okay, the annual was really nice if nothing else. But the whole technarchy thing was super confusing and I don't think I quite understood what went on.

Back to the main issues.

Can Ronan and the Super Skrull be forced to team up all the time? It is such a joy seeing two enemies be forced to actually work together. In other news Ronan's decision to sacrifice his entire planet rather than see them forced into slavery might be one of the most stupid plans I have ever heard. Ever. Like, it's the worst. Way to be a quitter Ronan! At least try and fight for your people. Also removing their chance to make this decision for themselves makes you pretty much just as bad as the brainwashing machines. Just saying.

Very sad about the fate of Moondragon, but I kinda saw that coming from the start. I'd be sadder, but it is comic books and it's been like eight years for all I know she could be alive in current continuity. Or Phyla Vell is dead. I just don't know. Mostly disappointed that I won't get a story about a lesbian couple where one half of the couple is a dragon and they travel around in space having adventures. I will have to write a story based on this premise myself because I really want it. Though in that one they would probably be searching for a way to turn the transformed individual back into a human. And there would probably be super powers, and space battles and alien worlds and. I'm getting off topic.

Phyla-Vell's continued struggles with her low self confidence speaks to me. Also I love her and how awesome she is. She is my favorite character after Richard Rider. I loved all the characters, but these two were definitely my favorites. She had a really great personal arc, I loved it.

There were a lot of little things I really adored about this story as well, and I'm not going to bring them all up. I think that both Annihilation and this sequel were really really good, I can't say which one is better. They both have strong points and some flaws, but it all sort of evens out into two really great stories. Also space opera, I'm so there for that.

I had a lot of fun reading through these, to the point where I felt that maybe I should have read it slower so as to not finish it too fast, but at the same time I wanted to get to the end and see what would happen! Ah, the constant struggle.

So, that was Annihilation: Conquest and I'm so totally hooked on cosmic marvel now. The plan is to continue reading the solo Nova series, as well as check out the Guardians of the Galaxy comic. I'm also reasonably sure there must be more crossover events, which I will have to look into later.

I won't be diving into those right now though as I will be returning to the DC universe. I'm trying to decide between Booster Gold's first solo book or Kyle Rayner's run as the Green Lantern from the 90's... Hm... Not an easy decision.
Also more Convergence! Though, after last week and the week before I'm not going to be buying as much this week or next, which is probably good for my bank account...

comic books, adventures in a strange new universe, also known as the marvel universe
