Animals, resurrected heroes with partial amnesia and adventures on another earth

I had a really hard time deciding what to follow up with after JLI and Green Arrow. I considered just carry on with Green Arrow, or maybe doing Green Lantern and the Guy Gardner book, but then I thought what if I do the pre reboot Animal Man mini series that'll be over quick and Justice League 3000 is short. So I picked those, and also Earth 2, because... IDK. Nicola Scott is the artist.

I have no idea what to think about this book. I think that once I reached the end I ended up liking it, but through the previous parts I was a bit meh. I do like that Buddy learned something, of course it's completely pointless since there's about to be a huge reboot, but still he learned something, that's always good in a story.

It takes place in the future (a future that no longer exists), which was probably for the best. I have three folders in my to-read folder split between New 52, Pre- and Post Infinite Crisis (it made sense at the time to split them there now I'm not so sure but I'm not about to change it). And suddenly dropping into Post Infinite Crisis era would have been weird after all the reboot stuff or late 80's/early 90's stuff. So having it take place in the future was kinda nice because than any weirdness I felt could be blamed on that.

I really don't have much more to say about it. It wasn't great. It wasn't terrible. It was okay for most part. I can't believe they had Buddy and Kory kiss, why? Why? Why? I just don't understand. At least Buddy was suitably "what the fuck am I doing" about it, but still. Let's just pretend it did not happen.

So yeah... It was okay I guess.

It actually made Buddy's daughter a lesbian, which is nice, representation is awesome. But that's not going to last I suspect what with the whole reboot and her being a kid again.

Seriously I haven't seen this miniseries mentioned anywhere on tumblr. It's either the old 80's/90's stuff or reboot. Did it even count as canon before the reboot? Who knows. Probably someone. I don't care. Let's move on.

This was a pleasant surprise. I actually like it. After the first couple of issues I was mostly confused and not very sure about it, but after a little while I started to really enjoy it despite my confusion. And then some other things happened in the later issues and yeah, I'm completely sold on this one now.

I think it helps that this is in the far future. It helps that there's a convenient 'memory loss' excuse to explain why this justice league doesn't act like the justice league. I am actually quite amused by their take on them. Especially Superman as this asshole douche who talks about himself in third person, has the ego of a sun and can't fly, though he remembers flying before but not that he can't fly now. It's hilarious.

It helps that we later find out that this is Earth-51 and so it has a completely different history. A history in which Countdown to Infinite Crisis never happened. I think Identity Crisis also never happened which I am super happy about.

As I have gotten used to with team books, they argue a lot and are always on the verge of fighting each other, but I don't really care. I am intrigued by the setting, and what the hell happened to the universe. I am intrigued by these new characters. I am amused that the writers so soon seem to have had enough and are bringing in the Justice League International members. ;p It's actually them too. The pre-reboot Ice. Booster and Blue Beetle (I'm not telling how they managed it all I'm saying is that it's not time travel and not clones).

I like the fact that Hal Jordan is still shrunken down. That he was carried around like a little doll. I like that Barry was killed twice (not counting the fact that he was killed way back in time since they are all technically resurrected), and that after the second time he wasn't brought back, instead they resurrected another woman and spliced her DNA with some of Barry's making her a female Flash. Increasing the number of female characters on the league (Wonder Woman is also confirmed as bisexual in this book. It's still not the greatest book at representation however since it's ridiculously white. There's hardly any POC characters). Also Hal's sad because they aren't properly mourning Barry. What, that amuses me. I'll shut up about that now.

I actually liked the new Flash costume Barry was wearing. Oh, and Barry first had red hair, then the second time he was resurrected his hair was brown. And they were all "Well, sorry, we didn't know it's just all our documents say you had RED hair" because Wally Fucking West (The One True Flash) was a redhead, and everyone remembered him being the Flash. Or at least that's how I interpreted that scene... Anyway, Barry died with brown hair, because no one could remember him being a blonde. Not even me.

So, yeah. I'm actually enjoying this one.

Okay, so it did not start out well. If they had just not brought up the fact that Jay and Joan are no longer married after the reboot I would have been perfectly happy. If she didn't show up at all I'd be happy. I'd just go "man, young Jay is really pretty and cute" and that would have been it. Yes, I might be a little bit disappointed by the fact that a married couple no longer existed but apparently the people in charge over at DC hate the fact that all the Flashes were happily married. I don't know what their problem with married superheroes is, but I'd like them to get the fuck over it. I'd handle it though. It's the fact that they had a fucking break up scene between the now very young Jay and Joan. They had a scene of them breaking up, and it broke my fucking heart okay.

Everything else so far, I'm perfectly okay with. I'm intrigued, I like the plot elements. I want there to eventually be more of a team dynamic but fuck it, if there's one thing I've learned from all the team books its that I'm never going to get that. I've stopped hoping for it.

Anyway, I like the diversity of the rest of the characters who aren't Jay and Alan. Also Alan being gay is another plus for them.

I've only read 12 issues and it still feels like it's just started. We've finished some stories, but it's been more a long arc running through all these issues. I'm a bit hesitant about the writer change coming up in a few issues. It feels like the first guy has barely even started.

Anyway, with the exception of Jay who showed up in The Flash comic book, this is another case where I'm not super familiar with the team pre-reboot and so it's probably helping a bit.

I will read more of this though because it certainly has potential.

This is completely unrelated to anything in this post but you know what's sad? That there are not a hundred fics in which Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner have to get married on an alien planet and then end up falling in love.
You can totally tell that my background is in the SGA fandom with a tiny dip into the reboot Star Trek fandom.

Accidental marriages. Having to pretend to be married. Marriages of convenience. Why are there not more of these fics? In general I wonder why there's so little fic for this pairing. It's barely any more fic now than when I read GLC the first time around years ago. In general there's very little fic outside of the batfam. Stupid attention hogging bats.

I'm almost tempted to write a cliche riddled marriage fic myself.
