So my jewelry classes are going well. I’m taking a copper metal clay class and a lapidary class. I’ve been curious about metal clay for a while now, as it seemed like a potentially easier method of creating things from metal. And so far it’s looking like it is. Here’s what I made in my class last week. It was fired over the week and last night we tumbled it to create the shine. Next week, we’ll add patinas, although I like how shiny it is. I also made some more stuff last night that I hope turns out well, and have a bunch of clay to work with before the next class, so I’ll have to think of some really cool ideas as it’ll be my last shot, since next week is the last metal clay class.

I expressed interest in learning how to make metal boxes and the teacher said she’d be willing to do a 2nd level class where we learned to do that, and I was recommended to some places that have silver metal clay classes, as silver is apparently easier to work with than copper.

I’m excited at learning this new technique that will open up lots of new possibilities for ideas that I have for things I’d like to make.

I also like that so many of these techniques I’ve been really hesitant and afraid of…ie soldering, using a torch, using a kiln, but as I’m learning the techniques I’m learning that while they are things that definitely have safety precautions, they’re not as scary as I thought.

I was delighted to find out last night that I can have a kiln in my apartment. I thought it was something that would have to be in a ventilated basement or outside or whatnot, but I was told the kind of kiln I’d be using doesn’t emit any toxic fumes, so it’s perfectly fine. Soooo I totally know what I want to try to get myself for my birthday this year. :)

Tonight is my 2nd lapidary class, where I think I’ll be polishing and shining my green jasper. It’d better be a great class since I’ll be missing the City Paper Best of Baltimore party as a result. *sniffles*

This Saturday there’s a gem and mineral show going on that the Gem Cutters Guild (where I’m taking my classes) is putting on at the Howard County Fairgrounds that I want to go to. Apparently there will be raw gems and fossils and stuff, plus it’d be a chance to talk more to the people in my classes. Should be fun.
