Your analogy of Leonardo and Mona Lisa was perfect. Perfect in how the desire to merge can be intesnse -- yet you cannot, at least while living. The desire to merge with the double -- the tension is required -- that dance with the Anima/Animus, has to occur, so we can grow, and grow toward them, but the merging cannot occur until it's proper time.

I suspect, the reason why Mona Lisa spoke to so many, was because she was the expression of his own Anima. The one who was his inspiration of his art. She was the one who took Leonardo's hand, and guided him to doing great work. She was real, as real as any person known like you or I. But she was the muse of his mind, the Anima calling him toward the eternal, the double he dreamed, who dreamed the Self. Yes, yes. But in this life, they had to divide, so he could do great work, before they could achieve Union once again.

Don Juan said, if we did come to face with our own double, we would die. The reason why we would die is because once we faced the double, the desire to merge would become so strong, we would merge. I've wondered too, recently, if "Don Juan," was Castaneda's representation of this, taken from the original novel the Phantom of the Opera: Don Juans Triumphant, was the name of the work which the Phantom wrote, and insisted the Opera House play for him, insisted he have that expression via his passion, so the world would get the message.
