Okita-san, I'll be going out today. If you require anything, feel free to ask.

[A New Feather? This is the first one he's seen all month... unusual indeed. Well, it won't do to just leave her looking lost like that, so he'll walk over to her.]

Excuse me, do you need any help?

[Such handsome young men coming to a lady's rescue. Susumu bows slightly in greeting.]

Yes, I would greatly appreciate that. My name is Sen, and I'm afraid I don't know where I am right now.

[As a well-mannered young man, Richard will extend his hand for a handshake. Too bad he doesn't know he's already done the very same thing with this person before.]

I'm Richard-- it is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Sen. I assume from your attire that you have already found the clothing shop, but is there anything else you are missing, such as a weapon or something similar?

[At least he knows what it means now- but Susumu merely bows again, declining the handshake. He's never let a man touch him while in this persona- it's too risky, taking a chance that someone might notice something, like the way his hands aren't as soft as a lady's ought to be, or how strong his grip is. Better to let them watch and see a woman than feel and ask questions.]

Yes, fortunately I found my clothes. I've never carried a weapon, though! That's far too dangerous for me.

[After a moment of just holding his hand out, he'll withdraw it with the assumption that she's just shy, or that it isn't proper for unmarried women to touch men in her culture or something to that effect. Either way, he's not that bothered by it.]

You might want to start carrying one here just to be on the safe side.

[Well, at least he doesn't look offended. Susumu just smiles politely and shakes her head.]

I wouldn't know what to do with it if I did carry one.

[Which is something of a lie; plenty of domestic women carry and know how to use daggers to protect themselves, though their training is minimal at best. He doesn't need to know that, though.]

I'm sure there are those here who could teach you if you wish to learn. I'm taking lessons in swordsmanship myself from a man named Sir Sigmund; you could always speak to him and see if he would be willing to take on another student. Providing that you're interested, of course.

Perhaps. The idea of doing so is a little frightening, I admit.

Yes, I can see why it would be. It's very different from the fencing I was taught as a child.

You must be well-educated in such arts, then.

In fencing, yes. In swordsmanship for actual combat, not as much. That's why I've been taking the lessons.

I don't understand what you mean by fencing.

It's a type of swordplay based primarily on speed and technique. It's meant as a sport for the most part and isn't really suited for the battlefield.

[Battle skills wasted on sport? Bleh. Susumu has to keep his irritation as carefully concealed as ever.

What a waste.]

You're very wise to learn a more suitable art, then.
