Don't make any hasty decisions - your advisers mean well, but there may yet be a solution you haven't yet thought of. Here's why I say this. Last year, I put my cat in a cattery when I went to visit my mother for three days. My mother was taken to hospital, and it became clear that she could not return directly to her flat There was an appalling two months during which she moved between hospital and nursing home She refused at first to give up her flat, which at least meant that I could stay there, because she qualified for aid with nursing home fees while she was paying rent for the flat I had to borrow the money for the third party contribution to the fees, and for the cattery, and several people advised me to rehome the cat, rather than get into debt. The cattery owner was appalled, and said that she was very willing to accept whatever I could afford and wait for the rest - "after all, if you don't manage to find the money, I get to keep her". So there are people who understand the bond between animal and human, and there way be a way forward that your well-meaning advisers haven't thought of. For example, in the UK, there is a special animal insurance for people on low incomes - much cheaper than the ordinary animal insurance - which means that I only have to pay for immunizations - her health care is free.
