Went to pick up oldest son this past weekend from his first year at college.
Oberlin is a very long way from Atlanta. 700 miles each way. I left Sat morning at 6:15am, and still didn't get up to Oberlin until 7:30.
Driving both up and back was uneventful. Sunday was much better, both because we shared the driving (and I napped when not driving) and because we made it about 100 miles closer to Atl on Saturday night.
And then didn't get to a motel until 12:30. Not for lack of trying, but it seems that everyone in or out of OH had to stay at a motel Satruday night. We must have gone to 6 different motels over a stretch of 80 miles, and heard every kind of excuse for why they were sold out:
- a race of some kind (car racing, i'm guessing)
- multiple weddings (hopefully not the shotgun kind - wait, that's only in Alabama)
- graduations
- Proms (apparently OH schools get out later than we do)
- a fishing tournament
- a lacrosse tournament
The place we finally got to had one room left, and though $90 a night was a lot more than I wanted to pay, I gladly paid the toll.
Oldest boy is now home and already bugging the family. He stays up very late, which is disturbing to some, particularly K, who is a light sleeper.
He woke up her at 4am this morning when he went out to the car to get a box with sheets in it so he could make his bed.
