Ch. 5

By the time Friday morning rolled around Miranda was unable to even look at Andy. Susan Orlean had tried in vain to set up a dinner. Andrea had gleefully told Susan each time that Miranda was unavailable for dinner, since she had to be home with her daughters. What Andy had not expected was for Susan Orlean to walk into the office and ask to see Miranda. “I’m sorry, but Miranda is unavailable right now Ms. Orlean” Andy said as politely as she knew how.

Miranda had heard the conversation from inside her office and couldn’t help but smirk. Susan wasn’t going to give up easily and her Andrea was doing her best not to let Susan anywhere near her. Miranda shook her head and said “Andrea, inform Susan that while I do not have time to see her now, if it is convenient for her I can come to her office after this meeting.”

Andrea looked at Susan who brightened and said “For you Miranda I can always spare a few minutes, I will see you in about an hour.” Susan turned to Andy and winked and walked off. Andrea glared at her as she retreated and she thanked God that Emily had gone to the bathroom, otherwise she would have given her that snotty look. Then Andy turned her glare towards Miranda and Miranda just looked and raised her eyebrow, and motioned for Andy to come into her office. Andy got up from her desk with her notepad and pencil and walked into Miranda’s office. “Is there anything I can do for you Miranda?” Andy said in an overly sweet voice

For Miranda’s part she found Andy’s attitude and her jealousy comical. “Andrea don’t you trust me? I do have to see what she wants; after all she is my boss.” Miranda said and Andy scowled. “Oh I trust you; it’s her I don’t trust. You’re office is wide open, there’s no way anything underhanded can be done in your office. However, hers is much more private.” Andy growled. Miranda smirked. “Darling nothing is going to happen. If she does indeed invite me to dinner then I will explain to her in person that I do not want to see her romantically.” Miranda then looked to the outer office and saw that Emily was still gone and she continued.  “Then after today I am all yours. Pity you have to wait for the book. I’m giving Roy the night off so you are going to have to bring my dry cleaning and the book over by cab.” Miranda looked up as Emily entered the outer office and sat back down and Miranda gave Andy a smoldering look and then said “That’s all”

Andy tried very hard to stop her knees from wobbling as she walked back to her desk.

3 p.m. Susan Orleans’s office (formerly Irv Ravitz’s office)

Miranda, as promised showed up at Susan’s office just after her meeting. Miranda walked right past the secretary and entered the office without even knocking.

Susan was sitting at her computer looking over the latest budgets and looked up when she heard her door open and shut, and smiled brightly when she saw Miranda walking towards her desk. “Miranda, I’m glad you could spare a few moments to come and talk to me.” Susan said and Miranda nodded. “Of course, what did you want to see me about?” Susan motioned for Miranda to take a seat and as Miranda did so Susan began. “I was looking over the budgets for each of the magazines and frankly most of the money given to them is wasted because they do not use it. I have also noticed that you’re budget is always on the mark and quite often over.” Susan said. “Yes, it costs a great deal to keep the magazine the number one in the world, Susan. I am over budget quite often because Irv liked to cut mine and dispense it to magazines that did not need it, as you have obviously seen.” Miranda said. “Yes, I have noticed that, which is why effective immediately RUNWAY is getting a substantial budget increase and the other magazines here are getting their budgets cut if they are substantially under. It should be a win, win situation for everyone.”

Miranda nodded her approval and couldn’t help but smile. There was finally someone who knew what they were doing running the budgeting at Elias Clarke. “Thank you, Susan. If that’s all you needed to see me about I really must be on my way. I have a busy day to finish out as I am sure you do as well.” “Yes, I do. That’s all I needed from you business wise. However, personally, I would like to ask you out to dinner tonight Miranda.” Susan said as she got up from her chair and came around and perched on her desk in front of Miranda. Miranda looked at Susan and sighed. “Susan, I can’t.” Miranda said and Susan looked at her confused. “Your first assistant told me earlier when I called that you had no plans for this evening.” Susan said. “That is not the reason why I cannot go to dinner with you Susan, the reason I cannot go to dinner with you is because I am not interested in you romantically.” Miranda stated as she stood from her chair.

“So the kiss in your car meant nothing?” Susan asked and moved closer to Miranda. “That was a moment of insanity, and I apologize if I have led you on; but I do not care for you in that way.” Susan nodded her head. “You are a very beautiful woman Miranda Priestly; you can’t blame me for trying.” Miranda nodded her head and turned to leave when Susan grabbed her hand and turned her back around. “Allow me one more chance to change your mind.” Susan said right before she lowered her mouth onto Miranda’s. Miranda’s eyes widened and she brought her hands up to begin pushing Susan away

(At the same time outside of Susan’s office)

“I don’t care if Miranda is in a meeting with Susan! I just got a call from Dalton saying that Caroline fell and broke her arm during soccer practice! I’m going in there damn it!” Andy said and pushed past the secretary and burst through the office doors only to be stopped dead in her tracks. “Oh my God” Andy said.

Hearing her Andrea enter the room Miranda pushed harder and finally pushed Susan away from her and turned to her Andrea. “Andrea why are you here?” Miranda asked quietly.

Andy was fuming. Miranda had been trying to push Susan away when she came in and Andy saw that. She was enraged that Susan had not listened to Miranda’s protest. Upon hearing Miranda’s question she snapped out of it and quickly walked towards Miranda. “Dalton just called. Caroline fell and broke her arm during Soccer practice. They are taking her to the hospital. I have called Roy and he is downstairs waiting for you already.” Andy said. Miranda’s face paled. “You are coming with me.” Miranda stated and Andy nodded her head and headed out of Susan’s office right behind Miranda.

Once they were in the car, and the privacy screen was up Miranda turned to her Andrea. “Is she all right?”  “Yes, they said she was crying and in pain. But the school nurse said that the break was clean. They x-rayed her arm at Dalton and everything. The only thing that they have to do at the hospital is put on the cast, and then she will be allowed to go home. Cassidy is with her.” Miranda sat back in her seat. Andy knew that despite the information she had given, Miranda was still upset that her child had been injured. “Miranda” Andy said quietly. Miranda looked at her and Andy continued. “If it helps, kids break bones all the time. They are very young and heal quickly. I have broken both of my arms once. Each time I was healed within six weeks and I was out kicking butt again. I broke mine during Lacrosse though.” Andy said and Miranda gave her a tight, but genuine smile. “Thank you, Andrea.” Miranda said. Andy smiled. “I know, if you are anything like my mom you won’t truly feel better until you see her.” Andy reached across the seat and gently took Miranda’s hand. Miranda relaxed a little bit.  She was thankful that there was at least one issue she would not have to deal with at the moment.

They arrived at the hospital five minutes later and Miranda stormed in and over to the nurses desk. “Where can I find my daughter, Caroline Rider?” Miranda demanded and the nurse trembled. “She is down the hall last room on the left.” Miranda nodded and walked quickly down the hall and into her daughter’s room. She found Caroline in bed asleep with Cassidy sitting on the bed next to her. “Mom!” Cassidy said and jumped up and ran and hugged her. “Hello Darling, how is your sister?” Miranda asked just as the doctor came in. “Ms. Priestly my name is Dr. Rodgers. I have given her some morphine for the pain and she is sleeping comfortably. Now that her arm has been set and the cast is on it she shouldn’t be in too much pain when she wakes up and by the end of today she will no longer be in any pain at all. The cast is holding the break in place and the sling is keeping it still. After two weeks she will no longer need the sling, and in four more weeks she will be able to get the cast off. It was a clean break, and she will be up and running around in no time.” He said and Miranda nodded  “Thank you doctor, when may I take her home?” “You can take her home as soon as she wakes up. I will have a nurse bring you the release forms.” He said and left the room.

Miranda walked over to Caroline and ran her fingers through her hair. She looked down at her left arm and smiled when she saw the plain white cast. “She wanted a plain cast so that you could draw something on it for her.” Cassidy said and Miranda turned to her other daughter and lifted her onto the bed. “I will do just that. Did she say what she wanted on it?” Miranda asked Cassidy. “She said she wanted butterflies, and dragon flies.” Cassidy related. “Alright then, do me a favor darling and go out to the nurse’s desk and get my assistant. She should have sharpies in her purse.” Cassidy hopped off of the bed and then turned to Miranda “Oh and Dad said he is on his way.” Cassidy said and left the room.

Soon Cassidy came back with her Andy in tow. “Cassidy said you needed some sharpies?” Miranda nodded her head. Andy reached into her back and pulled out a case that held every color sharpie imaginable. Miranda looked at her mildly surprised and Andy shrugged her shoulders. “I always try to be prepared for anything.” She said and Miranda nodded. “Go back to RUNWAY and rearrange my schedule. I will not be returning to work today. Tell Roy that he may take the rest of the day off after he drops you off at RUNWAY. That’s all” Miranda said and Andy nodded and turned to leave the room as the girls’ father Greg entered the room.

5:00 p.m. RUNWAY

Andy had arrived back and had gotten busy with rearranging Miranda’s schedule.  As she did Emily was packing up to leave.

Just as Andy had gotten through updating Miranda’s schedule she received a text on her phone. She looked down and saw that it was from Miranda and quickly opened it.

Cassidy is awake; I am helping her over to her father’s house. Despite earlier events I hope our night can still go as planned.-M

Andy grinned for the next hour until Susan Orlean walked into the office. “Oh, Andrea is Miranda busy?” Andy didn’t even try to hide her eye roll. “Yes, Ms. Orlean Miranda is very busy, her daughter broke her arm and she will be tending to her daughter for the rest of the day.” Andy said. Susan gave Andy a fake smile. “Oh that’s too bad. I was hoping to finish where we left off earlier, you know when you so rudely interrupted us.

Andy began chanting to herself “Don’t take the bait, don’t take the bait don’t take the bait..”

“After all Miranda is such an amazing kisser I really can’t get enough of her.” Susan said and Andy snapped. Andy rose quickly from her seat and stood eye level with Susan. “You and I both know that Miranda did not want to kiss you earlier today Ms. Orlean. When I came in I saw her trying to push you away. She did not just suddenly push you away because I entered the room. Now, let me make myself clear. I realize that you are Miranda’s boss, so that means that you could fire me if you damn well please. However, I don’t give a flying fuck because dismissing me for standing up for my boss will be a costly mistake. If word got out that you forced yourself on Miranda like that you would be fired. I suggest you back away and respect her wishes; I haven’t worked here for nearly a year for nothing. An anonymous inside tip would be the end of your career. We do have security cameras in your office. Irv insisted on them. Looking at that tape would be all that was needed to get your ass fired. “Andy said and smiled politely. “So we can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way. The decision is yours now fuck off.” Susan looked at her and narrowed her eyes. “This isn’t over, not by a long shot.”  Susan said and then stormed out.

Soon after Susan left the book arrived and Andy was thankful that it was early. She grabbed the book, Miranda’s dry cleaning, hailed a cab and headed to Miranda’s town house. She knew she had to tell Miranda about what happened with Susan Orlean, and she used the ride to come up with a way to word it right. Before she knew it the cab driver had pulled up in front of Miranda’s town house. She paid the driver and got out.

Once Miranda knew that Caroline would be just fine she spent the rest of the day worrying about the kiss her Andrea had witnessed. She hadn’t seemed upset in the car or at the hospital, but then again she knew that Miranda needed to focus on her children. Now that she looked back she saw the look of fury in her Andrea’s eyes when she walked in on them. “Will she still be my Andrea after tonight?” Miranda thought to herself and held her breath as she heard the door to the townhouse open. She heard the closet door open, and then shut. Miranda got up from her chair and decided to meet her in the hallway.

“Andrea” Miranda said softly. Andy turned her head to see Miranda standing at the end of the hallway, dressed in an off the shoulder sweater, slacks and no shoes. She was the most beautiful thing Andy had ever seen. “Good evening Miranda.” Andy said. “We need to talk.” Miranda said and Andy nodded her head “Yes we do.” Miranda motioned for her to follow her into the den where she poured them both a glass of scotch, and they sat down on either end of the couch. Miranda took a drink from her glass and sat it down on the table, as Andy did the same.  “Andrea, about what you saw today in Susan’s office…”  Miranda started but Andrea cut her off. “Yes, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about, well kind of.” Andy said and Miranda started to continue but paused and then said “kind of?”

Andy nodded her head.  “I was enraged by what I saw. She was kissing you, and you clearly were trying to get her to stop. She was taking advantage of you.” Andy said and Miranda felt herself relax completely. Andy noticed and chuckled “You were worried that I would blame you weren’t you?” Andy asked and Miranda nodded. Andy smiled and pulled Miranda close to her. “I could never blame you. Anyways, she came into the office after I got back. She was looking for you. Telling me she wanted to pick up where you two had left off. She kept talking about it and I snapped. I got up and I told her that I realized she could fire me for what I was going to say, and that I didn’t give a flying fuck. I then proceeded to tell her that Irv had camera’s put in that office and should she fire me the press would get an anonymous tip about the new CEO trying to take advantage of her employees, and that she needed to back off and leave you alone.” Andy said and Miranda looked up at her in awe.

“You where in the outer office correct?” Miranda asked and Andy nodded her head. “I have to see that.” Miranda said and got up and motioned for Andy to follow her into her study.  Miranda sat down at her desk and logged on to the Elias Clarke website. She clicked on the security option and then entered a 20 digit code. “I am allowed to view the footage from my outer office if ever I need to.” Miranda explained. She clicked on today’s date and then quickly scrolled through the recorded footage until she came across what she was looking for. Miranda turned the volume up and hit play. As she watched the scene unfold Miranda grew quieter by the minute. By the end of the encounter her lips were pursed and Andy was worried. Miranda logged off of her computer and stood to face Andy. “Are you mad at me?” Andy asked quietly. “I am mad, but I am mad at Susan, not at you darling.” Miranda said gently. “You stood up for me in a way no one has ever dared.”  Miranda pushed Andrea into her chair and straddled her lap. “I’m not mad, I’m extremely turned on and I fully expect you to cater to me.” Miranda said before kissing Andy deeply, her tongue sliding in to meet Andy’s…….TBC

I PROMISE THE NEXT CHAPTER WILL CONTINUE RIGHT WHERE THIS ONE LEAVES OFF. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BETTER TO HAVE PRETTY MUCH A FULL CHAPTER DEDICATED TO THEIR FIRST TIME AND NOT JUST A TINY BIT OF ONE.
