Sanada/Kirihara, arrangement in black and gold. Sanada makes a card.Sanada studied the calligraphy in front of him, stark black writing against the card; not white, but ivory, softer and more gentle than the blinding whites of most paper. It still didn't fit, though: the black was too imposing, too demanding, against the pale ivory color ( ... )

In high school, the team is together with the exception of Kirihara, who joins them after a year: Rikkai expects nothing else and wants nothing else. There is maybe not a traditional closeness between the team, the kind of closeness that exists between normal groups of friends, but there has never been anything normal about them. And more importantly, they know and understand each other and within the chaotic boundaries between them, there exists an order that not many people would see, let alone understand. It suits them though, this team made up of the oddities.

They are not all on the regulars their first year: Yukimura is. It was as if the high school team had been waiting for him, for it seems almost from the first day there is a spot for him. Sanada and Yanagi follow shortly afterwards, and the others think: this is a repeat of middle school. In ways, that idea disturbs them all, and comforts them. There will be spots for the rest, and things will be normal again once Kirihara joins them ( ... )

Music brought out a whole different side of Yanagi. It interested him, obviously; Niou could see the spark of interest there, even when Yanagi's eyes were closed and there was nothing in his body language to indicate to most of the world that Yanagi was enjoying what he was learning. But Niou was smart; smart and sharp and he'd known Yanagi for years, long enough to gain something of an understanding.

They never played, in class. It was theory and study, no practice or play, and it was one of the many things Niou wished for, and attempted to change, bringing in his sister's flute or stealing a violin from one of the musicians in the class, creating music that schreeched and made people grit their teeth.
