Captain Teddy Bear and the Pink Pillow

Jun 23, 2008 15:54

Another challenge from Jay. It was a dual challenge - a children's story and a children's story written for adults. This is the first.

(I wrote these all months ago; Jay is only finally letting me post).

Captain Teddy Bear stood on the foredeck of the Black Pillow, his one good eye watching the rise and the dip of the seas surrounding the ship. Everyone knew the seas of Bed'and were terrible - calm one moment, stormy the next and full of dangerous beasts. And since they were so close to home, none of the crew members, including the captain, wanted to get lost in the waves around the Mountain of Blank-Ets.

"There's been no sign of the Black Hisser," the first mate, One-Legged Rabb't said, moving to stand next to his captain. "He must be off terrorizing others."

"Even if he shows up unexpectedly, we'll fight!" Captain Bear announced. He wasn't afraid of the Back Hisser, even though it was during a battle with the great beast that he'd lost his eye. He was about to add something when a cry came up, making both the captain and the first mate look around.

"Ship sighted!" Owl of the keen eyes cried from his perch. "Ship sighted!"

And sure enough a ship approached, coming out the place it had been hiding among the coves and islands that seemed to be new each and every day.

"It's the Pink Pillow," someone yelled in the bustle as everyone took their places on the deck of the Black Pillow. A shudder ran through the crew as the ship came into plain view.

"Ahoy there, Captain Bear." Captain Bear lifted a spyglass to his eye to get a better look at who was talking - the dreaded Captain Ken Doll. Next to him stood Barbie Doll. "We'll let you pass in peace for a price."

"What's your price?" Captain Bear demanded, lowering the spyglass as they came close enough to see the people on the other ship.

"You have to give up your spot in Headlands and let us use the spot," Captain Ken told him and almost instantly, a cry went up among those on the Black Pillow. They had the best spot in all of the Headlands and it would take more than a slick captain to get it from them.

"Never!" cried Captain Bear, waving his paw and almost instantly the Pink Pillow was hit with a deluge of objects from the Black Pillow: bells and bows and a shoe or two, until the Pink Pillow was nearly covered.

From his spot, Captain Bear could see the other captain shake his head and turn back. Immediately they stopped throwing things and watched in silence as the Pink Pillow crept away. A cheer went up from the crew.

They'd saved their spot for another night.
