Last night I saw one of the best hockey games I've seen in awhile. For background: Ohio State was playing Ferris State in game three of a three-game series in the first round of the CCHA tourny. OSU is the reigning CCHA Tourny Champions, #2 seed, FSU is a pretty crappy team so it seemed that OSU would steamroll FSU on paper and especially after Friday's game (a 4-2 win).
Back to last night: OSU won 5-4 in OT, but things didn't get good until the middle of the third period. In the third, FSU was ahead 4-2, on a power play and in the OSU zone. OSU stole the puck, went down the ice on a 2-on-2 and scored shorthanded with under 10 minutes left. Flash forward to the last minute of play, OSU still down, everyone on their feet cheering, OSU scored with about 45 seconds left to tie. Fucking 45 seconds left!! In overtime, OSU scored about five minutes in and all is good for the time being. If OSU lost this weekend, any chance of a NCAA berth would have been out (and still might be if they don't win at least one this weekend). Now OSU will play in Detroit in the Super Six this coming weekend. Who wants to go up there for it?
Saturday's game was not so exciting even though it went into OT too. This time, no team scored in regulation. Then, FSU scored 60 seconds in to win 1-0. It was so anticlimatic. The teams come out, I turn my head and boom they score. Fuckers. During the game, a little girl got knocked in the head by a puck and was taken away. She ended up getting stitches, but now local tv is reminding us about what happened at the Blue Jackets game a few years ago and there's an outcry about how college games should have netting up now as well. Maybe it's just Columbus ice rinks should have netting up since all of the flukey puck accidents happen here.
Anyway, that was my weekend in a nutshell, a three night stand of college hockey playoffs. How much better does that get?
Go Bucks.
