Yuletide recs 2016

Dec 30, 2016 08:52

I was not expecting to have a rec list that was going to have around sixty-six recs. I guess it's because this year I looked for more fic in book fandoms and because I did get around to seeing at least one of Yuletide's "big for Yuletide" fandoms (Ghostbusters 2016).

Recs listed under the cut. After reveals, I'm going to add them to my Pinboard account.

And feel free to correct me on any goofs I've made in my linking or my headers; I think I caught them all before I published this in public, but I might've missed something.

Fandoms: Rosemary and Thyme, Duel after a Masquerade Ball - Jean-Léon Gérôme (painting), Alice In Wonderland - Lewis Carroll, American Horror Story: Hotel, The Americans (TV 2013), Cheese (Anthropomorfic), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Blazing Saddles (1974), The Bletchley Circle, Brooklyn (2015), Call the Midwife, Crimson Peak, Ex-Machina (2015), Fail_Fandomanon RPF, Fallen London, Flatliners (1990), Ghostbusters (2016), The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald, Heathers (1988), Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (TV), Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke, Look Around You, Lost Boys (Movies), Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, On the Jellicoe Road - Melina Marchetta. Tingleverse, The Sandman (Comics), Sharknado (Movies), Sleeping Beauty (1959), Tarot (Divination Cards), The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, What We Do in the Shadows, Ancient Egyptian Religion, The Breakfast Club (1985), Fantasia (1940), Deadpool (2016), Neko Atsume, and A Year and A Day in Old Theradane - Scott Lynch.

This is my gift this year, by the way (Hollow Bones; Rosemary and Thyme, Rosemary & Laura, not rated).

Duel after a Masquerade Ball - Jean-Léon Gérôme (painting)

  • L'Abécédaire d'un duel (Teen | original characters [gen])
A well researched, well plotted story of the duel mentioned in the artwork. Don't take it from me--here's what the recipient said about it!

Alice In Wonderland - Lewis Carroll

  • Cucumber Sandwiches (General Audiences | Bill the Lizard, the Gryphon, The Mock Turtle)
Bill, Gryphon, and the Mock Turtle have tea. I felt the author's combinations of various Alice in Wonderland canons created a charming story that feels like it belongs in the original book.

    American Horror Story: Hotel

  • This Could Be Heaven Or This Could Be Hell (Explicit | author chose not to use archive warnings | Tristan Duffy/Liz Taylor [American Horror Story], Countess Elizabeth Johnson/James Patrick March)
A look into the aforementioned couples' lives during the duration of the series, with a March that sounds like how Evan Peters played him in the series. My favorite part, though, is the resolution where Tristan and Liz find each other again after their death. I'm a sucker for ghosts falling back in love again, ha.

    The Americans (TV 2013)

  • Among Strangers (General Audiences | Martha Hanson/Clark Westerfeld, Elizabeth Jennings, Gabriel [Americans 2013])
This fic adds scenes for the episode "Travel Agents" and does it with ease.

  • Some Greater Awakening (Explicit | author chose not to use archive warnings | Elizabeth Jennings/Philip Jennings, Elizabeth's mother, Philip's mother)
This fic, set pre-series after Paige's birth but before Henry's (using information from all four seasons thus far), looks at Elizabeth and Phillip during their earliest years together, as well as flashbacks to their pasts to look at how those pasts shaped their present. There is also some hot smut, which makes this story that much sweeter.

  • One day in the life (Not rated | author chose not to use archive warnings | Elizabeth Jennings, Elizabeth's mother)
This is another take on what Elizabeth's childhood might've been like, a sad and bittersweet look at Nadya (Elizabeth's real name; obviously it had to change if she was going to spy in the US) caring for her ailing mother.

    Cheese (Anthropomorfic)

  • Galaxies de Fromage (General Audiences | Appenzeller, Asiago, Brie, Edam, Extra Old Cheddar, Havarti Dill, Jarlsberg, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorina, Stilton, String Cheese, The Cheesemonger, Tyro Smofla)
A fun and well executed take on anthropomorphic cheese IN SPACE.

    Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

  • Charity Is (General Audiences) and Six Sips of Strychnine (Teen | author chose not to use archive warnings | Abby Brewster & Martha Brewster)
Two takes (probably from the same author) about how the Brewster sisters ticked before the events of the the movie. Both fics are sinister yet whimsical just like the sisters themselves.

    Beauty and the Beast (1991)

  • Fine as a Feather Tick (General Audiences | Belle, Adam/Beast, Chip)
An adorable post-movie fic (well, the first movie, anyway) where the house adjusts to its residents being human again.

  • One Winter's Night (General Audiences | Belle, Maurice, Belle's mother)
A pre-movie fic solving why Belle and Maurice move to their little town and why Maurice is an inventor.

  • these long-prepared chains (Teen | author chose not to use archive warnings | Enchantress, Adam/Beast)
This fic attempts to figure out why Adam looks so young by the time he's freed of his curse, as well as other details that aren't really clear in the movie, such as the enchanted mirror. Here, Adam is cursed as a young boy. This fic shows the events leading up to Adam's curse.

  • Scenes from a Winter's Night (Teen | Adam/Belle, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip)
Cute fic where the household, post-the first movie, is getting together for Christmas.

    Blazing Saddles (1974)

  • work it out with your fingers (Teen | Sheriff Bart/Jim "The Waco Kid")
Shipfic that nails the absurdity and humor of Blazing Saddles on the nose.

    The Bletchley Circle

  • Statistical Methods in Risk Assessment (General Audiences | Jean McBrien/Original Female Character, Lucy Davis, Alice Merren, Millie [Bletchley Circle])
In which Jean has a secret--a secret love, to be exact--involving a disastrous mission during WWII, and the one day that secret comes back into her life. Wonderful fic.

    Brooklyn (2015)

  • Half-Finished Starts (Teen | Tony Fiorello/Eilis Lacey)
Even if you've only read the book, you'll still be able to enjoy this fic based on the movie, where Tony and Eilis celebrate Christmas, continuing the feel-good ending both mediums had.

    Call the Midwife

  • Looking for Stars (General Audiences | Trixie Franklin/Patsy Mount)
Series 5 AU where Trixie breaks up with Tom, but discovers she's attracted to one of her co-workers. This fic really does feel like an episode of the show. (Note: there is a birthing scene in this fic; it's not graphic, and it's closer to canon than it is kidfic with expecting MC parents.)

    Crimson Peak

  • A Wife's Place (Mature | Graphic Depictions Of Violence and Major Character Death | Lucille Sharpe & Thomas Sharpe, Margaret McDermott)
Chilling take on Margaret's demise before the movie.

  • Reunion (Mature | Lucille Sharpe/Thomas Sharpe)
Pre-movie fic where Thomas picks up Lucille from the sanatorium, with moments where you can feel Lucille and Thomas continuing their bond, although they know they really shouldn't.

  • Demons (Teen | Major Character Death | Edith Cushing/Lucille Sharpe, Edith Cushing & Alan McMichael)
After the movie and in this fic, Edith's not able to get away completely from Allerdale Hall; Lucille, as a ghost, travels with her. Edith, now a novelist, is suffering from writer's block, and in this chilling fic, Edith discovers the only way she can break her writer's block.

    Ex-Machina (2015)

  • More Human that Human (Mature | author chose not to use archive warnings | Caleb Smith)
Set after the movie, this creepy tale has Caleb learning he's not as damaged as he think he is, and has him avowing to be more human.

  • How to be a Woman (Explicit | Graphic Depictions Of Violence | Ava/Kyoko)
Also set after the movie, Ava and Kyoto reject Caleb and explore themselves instead. Contains hot robot sex.

    Fail_Fandomanon RPF

  • Pinch Hit of the Apocalypse (General Audiences | Heather, Sarah)
Meta fic where Heather and Sarah humorously work their way through an incredibly bad pinch hit.

    Fallen London

  • Hunting Smiles (Mature | Graphic Depictions Of Violence | Player character, Jack-of-Smiles)
This fic, where you, the player character, have to fight Jack-of-Smiles, feels as if it's one of those play-to-pay stories in the game.

    Flatliners (1990)

  • and dreams that shun the sun (Mature | David Labraccio/Nelson Wright)
Intense fic where Dave fights his way out of a coma.

    Ghostbusters (2016)

  • The Life and Tomes of Patty Tolan (General Audiences | Patty Tolan, Erin Gilbert, Abby Yates, Jillian Holtzmann, Kevin Beckman)
A short, yet intriguing look at Patty and her love of books.

  • Snatch and Grab (General Audiences | Patty Tolan, Erin Gilbert, Abby Yates, Jillian Holtzmann)
What starts off as a case fic eventually turns into a comic piece about the Ghostbusters causing property damage.

  • Five-Year PhDs Are For Dudes (Not Rated | Rebecca Gorin, Jillian Holtzmann)
Fic that shows the worries of Gorin towards her grad student, Holtzmann.

  • i wish i could get back there (Teen | Erin Gilbert & Abby Yates)
Near the end of the movie, Erin and Abby are dragged through into a portal. What I like about this fic is it takes that canon moment and gives it a little spin, having the two time travel back to their teenage years.

  • The 12 Days of Holtzmann (Teen | Jillian Holtzmann/Patty Tolan, Erin Gilbert, Abby Yates)
Fluffy fic where Holtzmann woos Patty with various gifts.

  • School Spirit (General Audiences | Patty Tolan, Erin Gilbert, Abby Yates, Jillian Holtzmann)
This casefic sees the Ghostbusters go back to high school, and it easily feels like a scene for a potential sequel.

  • Email Chaos (Teen | Abby Yates, Jillian Holtzmann, Patty Tolan, Kevin Beckman)
This comic fic lets Kevin be Kevin as he prints out emails in an attempt to be helpful.

  • Just Remember (Teen | Erin Gilbert/Abby Yates)
Abby and Erin in high school, falling in love with a lot of things. Cute and fluffy.

  • The Golden Ratio (General Audiences | Abby Yates, Bennie)
Abby and her quest for wonton soup continues in this short fic. To me, this felt like a continuation of canon.

Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald

  • Parallel (General Audiences | Major Character Death | Daisy Buchanan/Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway/Jay Gatsby)
You'd think Gatsby's death would haunt Nick even after the end of the book. In this fic, Gatsby's death does indeed haunt Nicky, in what could serve as an epilogue of the book.

  • To Stay at the Scene of a Crime (Teen | author chose not to use archive warnings | Nick Carraway/Jay Gatsby, George Wilson)
I thought this canon divergence AU, where Gatsby survived instead of died, was well executed and did what it was supposed to do: explore this alternate reality. I felt this could also go into The Great Gatsby. You know, if people were cool with rewriting The Great Gatsby.

    Heathers (1988)

  • A Whisper (Teen | Veronica Sawyer)
Easily one of my favorite drabbles to come out of Yuletide Madness is this one, which examines JD haunting Veronica after her death.

  • Dead Things Can't Grow (General Audiences | Major Character Death | Heather Chandler/Veronica Sawyer)
This fic poses an intriguing question: What if Veronica was haunted by Heather Chandler? And this fic answers that question with ease.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (TV)

  • Reap What You Sow (Explicit | Graphic Depictions Of Violence | John Childermass/John Segundus)
Childermass is cursed to carry a creature inside of him. He bravely does until he runs into Segundus and his luck changes. Equal parts dark, smutty, and amazing, and a very creative and well done mpreg scenario.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke

  • Crossroads and Thresholds (General Audiences | Emma Pole, Stephen Black)
Wonderful look at a post-book Lady Pole and how she finds the solution to her sleepless nights.

    Look Around You

  • J&NSMBE Revision Guides for Science (General Audiences)
Look Around You is a parody of British educational programs from the 1970s and 80s. This chapter from a fictional instructional book (which might be a nod to the actual show telling viewers to turn to a certain chapter in their instructional books, especially during the first series) captures the spirit of the show and its irreverent brand of "education."

  • Worked Example Answers: Chapter 3.14: Forces (General Audiences | marked as F/F because of one of the "answers" to the above fic)
Another writer wrote an answer key to the above fic's questions. Of course the answers are just as silly as the instructional chapter linked above.

    Lost Boys (Movies)

  • And Straight On 'Til Morning (Mature | David/Michael Emerson/Star)
Equal parts funny and sad, this AU has David survive the end of the movie (the first one) and joining Star and Michael on a road trip east.

    Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

  • Sing a Song of Sixpence (Teen | Phryne Fisher & Jack Robinson)
This long casefic story is set after season three. It manages to nail the case as well as the tone of the show.

  • The Wake, The Current, The Tide (Not Rated | author chose not to use archive warnings | Phryne Fisher, Elizabeth MacMillan, Dorothy "Dot" Williams)
Touching fic where Mac takes care of Phryne, despite the concerns of Dot.

  • A Meaningful Gift (Teen | Phryne Fisher & Dorothy "Dot" Williams)
Dot gets a treat from Phryne. A sweet, fluffy fic that slots well with canon.

On the Jellicoe Road - Melina Marchetta

  • Training Wheels (General Audiences | Raffaela/Chaz Santangelo)
The moments in this fic are short, but they convey a pleasant future that extends far beyond the book's ending.

    Tingleverse

  • Pounded in the Butt by My Yuletide Tags (Teen | Chuck Tingle/sentient AO3 tags)
Chuck Tingle's works are all about inanimate objects and fantastic creatures pounding other men in the butt and inanimate object/fantastic creature love. All three Tingleverse works do this well. Here, Chuck Tingle Buck Trungle is coaxed into Yuletide. And then is pounded in the butt by Yuletide tags.

  • Savage Lovecast Episode 69: Pounded in the Butt By Savage Lovecast Episode 69 [Transcript] (Mature | crossover with Savage Love RPF | Dan Savage)
This great crossover with the Savage Lovecast has Dan Savage talking to a man who is being pounded in the butt by other butts. It also mentions, covertly, several of Tingle's actual works. (If you don't want to hear a mention of US politics, this may not be the fic for you, btw.)

  • Arse-chive of my Own: Pounded in the Butt By the Lack of Tingleverse Fics in Yuletide 2016 (Explicit | crossover with Yuletide | Yuletide 2016/OMC)
World-renowned reindeer cosmetologist Booly O’Jeff gets a visit from Yuletide 2016 just in time to be pounded in the butt for Yuletide. This fic gets Tingle's style down so well it's scary.

    The Sandman (Comics)

  • Red Sky at Evening (General Audiences || Fiddler's Green | Gilbert, Rose Walker, Matthew the Raven, Dream of the Endless | Morpheus)
A dreamlike fic where Gilbert describes the visitors to his realm.

    Sharknado (Movies)

  • this is our battle cry (Teen | Nova Clarke/Skye, Lucas Stevens, Finley "Fin" Shepard)
For me, this F/F fic actually added depth and a moving, easy-to-follow story to a canon which doesn't have a lot of continuity. Unless you want to count those Subway product placements that appear in every movie.

    Sleeping Beauty (1959)

  • This is War (General Audiences | Aurora/Philip [Disney])
Awesome AU drabble where Aurora, in armor, saves Phillip.

  • All That's Best of Bright and Dark (General Audiences | Aurora/Philip [Disney], Maleficent [Disney], Stefan [Disney])
The same Disney story, told with a twist. (I guess it'd be a spoiler if I put it in my summation here?) And it reads just like a new version of the same fairy tale it's based on.

    Tarot (Divination Cards)

  • all and sundry fly towards that place whose reward is infernal (Explicit | Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings | Page of Swords/Knight of Wands, Three of Pentacles)
This fic may not be historically accurate, but it's a hot noncon situation between the most unlikeliest of characters, people drawn for tarot cards.

The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas

  • The Usurper (General Audiences | Porthos/OFC, Athos | Comte de la Fère, d'Artagnan (Trois Mousquetaires), Original Female Characters, Original Male Characters)
In a fic which seems like it came out of the book, Porthos discovers the one thing that makes him realize his life is not over.

    Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

  • to shine in use (Explicit | Deirdre Robespierre/Jacqueline Voohrees)
Enemy hatesex that feels like it's part of an episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

What We Do in the Shadows

  • Living Wild As Nature Intended (Teen | Stu [What We Do in the Shadows], Nick [What We Do In the Shadows], Viago [What We Do in the Shadows])
A trip to see kiwis goes awry--not surprising if you know about this canon. The author says they were inspired by the juxtaposition of the mundane and the supernatural in this fic, and their inspiration really shows here.

  • Shadowy Shenanigans (Not Rated | Viago [What We Do in the Shadows], Vladislav [What We Do in the Shadows], Deacon [What We Do In the Shadows])
Great envisioning on how the roommates could've met before the "documentary."

    Ancient Egyptian Religion

  • Older Than The Deserts (General Audiences | Ra [Ancient Egyptian])
This look at Ra in modern times has a poetic quality to it.

    The Breakfast Club (1985)

  • The Literal Elephant (General Audiences | John Bender & Brian Johnson, Andrew Clark, Claire Standish, Allison Reynolds [Breakfast Club])
You can feel Brian's rebellious spirit in this short fic as he tries to break away from his strict academic regime.

    Fantasia (1940)

  • Velika Noč (The Great Night) (General Audiences | Original Characters, Chernabog [Disney])
Told from an outsider's POV, this fic has an explanation for Chernabog's ghost army in the "Night on Bald Mountain" segment.

    Deadpool (2016)

  • lesser known celebrations (Explicit | Vanessa Carlysle/Wade Wilson)
In the spirit of Wade and Vanessa having sex during random holidays in the movie, this hilarious fic has Wade and Vanessa having sex during even more obscure random holidays.

    Neko Atsume

  • Neko Haiku (General Audiences)
This Madness fic is a series of haikus based on the author's own Neko Atsume game. That said, I really feel these haikus capture the essence of the game: fill bowls with food, attract random cats to your yard, collect currency, repeat.

A Year and A Day in Old Theradane - Scott Lynch

  • The Library of Hazar (Teen | Amarelle Parathis, Sophara Miris, Brandwin Miris, Shraplin Self-Made, Scavius of Shadow Street)
A heist fic that perfectly matches the comic tone of the short story.
