Unconventional Courtship: the process

Apr 01, 2014 11:46

So I've decided to write, at the very least, Sam/Fiona for
unconventionalcourtship, right? Except every time I pick a summary for them, I end up brain-choking in some way. Behold.

Side note: I finally gave up on Suits after last week's episode. Let's just say I couldn't deal with the plot development involving Louis and his heart attack--I thought it was too manufactured. But I can deal with Cyrus having a heart attack on Scandal for some reason. Regardless, this summary is out, because I don't want to do a royalty AU for this; I want to do a Harlequin Intrigue parody.

So originally I said I was going to do Navy Seal Surrender, right? But then I really read the summary, and I came up with the idea I couldn't execute for
kidficstory. So I decided to pass on that summary.

Then I modified the summary of The Admiral's Bride for a prompt:

His Mission
When six canisters of a lethal nerve agent are stolen from a military testing lab, retired Navy SEAL and unlicensed investigator Sam Axe must recover the chemicals -- by any means necessary. He defies convention and decides to infiltrate the compound where religious fanatics have stored the deadly toxin.

His Partner
Ex-IRA operative Fiona Glenanne is a jill-of-all-trades and an expert in espionage. Fiona agrees to assist Sam on the case, and, posing as husband and wife, they manage to gain access to the compound. But Sam fears his instant attraction to Fiona might compromise the mission.

His Crisis
Their marriage may be a hoax, but Sam's growing feelings for Fiona are anything but make-believe. With each hour he's in Fiona's company, the stakes get higher, the game more real. And the dangers within the compound escalate out of control.
Now everything is on the line.

But I couldn't come up with a plausible way anyone in Miami would need a nerve agent. So I moved on and modified the summary to Navy SEAL Security:

Fiona Glenanne couldn't help but notice the wet ex-Navy SEAL who washed up on the beach. He was Sam Axe, her teammate, for chrissakes. Nor could she overlook the burst of gunfire that followed his hasty introduction. Thankfully, Sam expertly shielded her from harm. Unfortunately, he landed her in the middle of his deadly covert op.

Fiona…well, she's far for innocent. But Sam never her to be connected to the bad guys he'd been sent to track down. But between the body splayed across her kitchen floor and the bullets narrowly missing them as they went on the run, Sam suspected there was more to the feisty bombshell than she let on. Not to mention a fiery passion he was happy to explore…

I couldn't come up with why Sam and Fiona are on a beach and then, suddenly, gunfire. I modified Explosive Attraction next:

The clock was ticking…

Sam Axe knew that, as a unlicensed bounty hunter and private investigator, Fiona Glenanne was used to people coming to her in need. (Then again, they already work together.) But now she was the one in danger. (Again.) A serial killer had made her a pawn in a sick game, sending her photos of his targets with ticking clocks. Even though Fiona knows how all sorts of explosives work, Sam was uniquely capable of keeping her safe. Usually Fiona rubbed Sam the wrong way, but when it came to his friend, his urge to protect and serve went way beyond the SEAL ethos. Getting to know the beautiful jill-of-trades further had opened Sam's eyes-and his heart. But if their elusive bomber had his way, Sam would never get a chance to prove just how far he'd go to keep Fiona alive.

But how do I backstory without embarrassing headcanon?? I thought, and so I gave up. I moved on to Alpha One:

"Fiona's missing. You have to get her back."

The minute he got the message, ex-Navy SEAL Sam Axe sprang into action. Getting Fiona Glenanne out of an abandoned warehouse in Miami alive was his only priority. But once the jill-of-all-trades was safely back in her apartment, Sam had a new mission: to get another chance with the woman he couldn't lose again.

Fiona had never forgotten the day, back in 2003, when Sam ruined her Libyan arms deal, denting her reputation in the gun running trade for a while. Now that Sam's a teammate and a friend to Fiona, he's sworn to protect her from the ruthless terrorist who wanted her dead. As passion blindsided her-and she was once again thrust into danger-Fiona realized how much she'd risk for one more day in Sam's arms.

...and I can't write the kidnapping thing because Fiona's been kidnapped 546 times in canon, so I gave up. But I do have a pre-series fic that'll fit an older prompt I prompted in
fic_promptly, so I'll post that there and here shortly.

I'm trying The Girl Next Door next, and I think I can actually use that summary as a workable prompt. We'll see. Otherwise...maybe I should look at the Harlequin supernatural romances and go Sleepy Hollow. Werewolf!Ichabod should be hilarious to read.
