Suits: the thirdish season, and some things

Mar 21, 2014 15:26

Since I haven't been talking about it too much, and I don't think there would be enough interest on
tv_talk for a thread. Also,
suits is dead, so, yeah.

I think I have two problems with Suits as of right now.

The first is a bit straightforward: the female love interests, Rachel and Scottie. I like the two characters, but it really feels like the story, especially now, is hinging on Scottie's involvement in Pearson Specter. It's a bit of a letdown, considering other plots for other seasons hinged on Mike's secret, Jessica losing control of the firm and the firm ceasing to exist. Also, I'm not seeing anything that's making my heart melt re: Scottie and Harvey. Canonically, Harvey's had trouble admitting to Scottie that he loves her, but, I don't know, it feels like the show's taking it for granted at the moment? Like I'm not sensing that Harvey is doing everything in his power to try to keep Scottie at his side. And I feel that Scottie is sidelining Rachel. Scottie shouldn't be sidelining Rachel, but she is. Before the third season break, Rachel was thisclose to going to Stanford to become a lawyer, but since then, she's been...around. In the last episode, she was in the apartment she shares with Mike and that's it. I've always loved this show because the female characters weren't reduced to not being essential to the show. Now I feel like I'm watching Gossip Girl after a lot of the people in the fandom were whining about how much they hated Jenny and Vanessa to the point they were written out. Except Gossip Girl fandom was filled with het shippers and Suits fandom (or whatever's left of it) is full of slashers.

The second is I feel the show has these potential big events that could seriously affect future episodes of the show, and yet the show chickens out on executing them. Like when Harvey didn't want to work with Mike. The show could've spent several episodes where Mike works with Louis while Harvey sweats it out by himself. But instead, that plot was resolved in, what, no more than three episodes max? That disappointed me. Or when Louis discovered Mike's secret. The show could've devoted more to two episodes to that plot, having Louis sneak around Harvey and his allies so he could get to the truth, and quite possibly, Louis revealing he knows Mike never went to college at all at the season finale. Instead, that plot was wrapped up in another two episodes. I mean, the pacing of Suits is a lot better than, say, Arrow or the last season of Burn Notice, but the pacing and the plot could be so much better.

I've got a couple of Suits fics in the works for
trope_bingo, so I'm finishing those up. But I'm really thinking of cutting my ties with Suits after this season, which would mean that, unless I do a Psych or Monk marathon or there actually is a new USA show I want to check out, I won't be watching a USA show for a while. :(
