First epee class was last night. Much fun was had, though I quickly found the huge gap between it and my previous sword training, and, for that matter, the martial arts training I had growing up. In my early Tae Kwan Do days, it was very firmly drilled into our heads that what we learned was for self defense only, to be used as a last resort. Then years later, I got myself a bit of stage combat training, which requires a focus on keeping safe distance and following the choreography, never actually hitting your partner in a way that could cause damage. And then there's epee fencing, where the only way to score points is to yes, actually hit the other person, and to take the offense on occasion. It's a huge mental break and distinction from all my former training, so it's going to take quite a bit of getting used to.

That being said, I get a weekly time to actually force myself to drill myself on footwork and I get to play with swords. This is going to be fun.
