This morning Java and I had a cat-sized adventure.
On weekend mornings she is often very, very cuddly. By which I mean she has to be on my lap or at my ankle and rubbing or kneading. This morning, once we had negotiated the stairs (always must go down the stairs from right to left in front of me) I opened the door to get the paper, and paused to note the weather. At which point Java slipped out the door. As she is an indoor cat, this was a bit concerning, but I managed to scoop her up before she got too far. Noting her interest in all the birds, I decided that she deserved some outside time.
In the interest of safety, this required putting on her harness, which someone had re-sized since the last time she wore it, so was even more fun than usual to get on. Java despises her harness (acts like she is glued to the floor and is generally miserable) so I tried enticing her outside with some treats. However, those treats had dried out since the last time I tried this, so I ended up just plopping her on the doormat so I could close the door.
Once outside and aware of all the moving things she was suitably entertained, but then decided that the place to be was under a bush on the side of the porch. Which normally would be fine, but it was cold, I was still in my pajamas and the leash isn't long enough to reach back to the door to tie off. So I ended up tramping about in the plantings in my slippers to bring her back onto the porch proper. I did tie her to the door for a bit (~3 min?) but when I came back she was looking inside, so I carried her in (otherwise I'd still be standing at the door waiting for her desire to be inside to win out over her hate of moving in the harness).
Back inside she went right back to the window to watch the birds, so I hope that she will learn that the harness is something to put up with to see birds. Or not.
