Sunrise.
The sunrise was different out here, more vivid, the pinks and purples swirling together in the sky. Stephen had never really been the type of guy to watch the sunrise, much preferring to be lying in bed with blackout blinds over the windows but here… Here he always seemed to wake up just a few moments before the sunrise began, and he sat there, blankets around him, as he stared at the sky. Sometimes he remembered other times, sitting and watching the sunrise with his father the morning after his mother had left, or with Nick after a night of chasing some future creature. Sometimes he pulled his covers over his head, refusing to watch, hating everything about this place, hating how beautiful the sunrise could be when he was trapped here, away from Nick, away from the life they’d managed to build together.  Today he watched, shivering slightly in the cold as he saw the first tinge of pink light the sky, his hand slowly slid inside his covers to grab at his knife as he heard a noise to his side, maybe it was deer, if he was lucky, he hadn’t had deer in a while… “You look like shit.” Talking deer… Wait, deer couldn’t talk could they? He honestly wasn’t sure anymore. Stephen slowly looked up, the hand holding his knife falling as he saw the man stood before him, “Hello Stephen.”

Stephen stared blankly at Nick, “Are you real?” He asked finally, tilting his head to the side and wondering if the man was a hallucination, he wouldn’t be the first.

“Yes, I’m real. And I’ve come to take you home.” Nick said quietly.

Stephen looked around, “On your own?”

“The others are coming. The soldiers and medics.” Said Nick, watching Stephen cautiously.

“Oh…” They stared at each other for a while before Stephen turned back to the sun, “Look at the sky Nick…”

Nick nodded, “It’s beautiful.” He said softly, “How… How long have you been here?”

“Four hundred and thirty one sunrises.” Stephen said promptly, moving his knife as Nick sat down next to him. He moved to take Stephen’s hand but Stephen jerked back, not wanting to believe, to hope, that this was real.

“It’s only been a week for us.” Nick said, looking distraught. “I’m so sorry.”

Stephen looked at him blankly before shrugging, “Look at the sky.” He murmured again as the soldiers came clambering over the rocks.
