Hmm, I reckon this might be another multiple answer here, though I only have 15 minutes to write this up before midnight! D:
My first response is George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, but it's already really popular and famous so I feel it's a little defunct telling people about it- most people who would care have already read it to death just like me! When people ask me what type of book it is I always say "political fantasy". I think that puts a lot of folk off, but I really can't thin of a better way to describe it. Basic plot involves the death of the king and the resulting civil war as different people try to claim the throne. This in-fighting means the kingdom doesn't notice the threats that are marching ever closer to their borders. It's a huge read, and it's nowhere near finished yet, but totally worth it in my opinion. If reading isn't your cup of tea, there is a television adaptation of the first book, A Game of Thrones in the works just now I believe. Can't wait 8D

It is one of a 'trilogy', but it doesn't really matter which book you start with. River God is set in ancient Egypt, while The Seventh Scroll revolves around a modern team of archaeologists puzzling out the traps in the tombs that were constructed in River God. Warlock is the final one in the series, and it is more of a sequel to River God. I inherited a bit of my Mum's fascination with ancient Egypt, so I found these quite captivating when (again) Dad gave them to me to read. Though I will say they are rather 'mature' for the age at which I read them, more for violence than anything, but there was the occaisional disturbing or raunchy scene if I recall correctly. I really should reread them at some point... If only I hadn't just started reading Song of Ice and Fire again :p
