Crushed.

It was like the whole world was devoid of moisture; the trees withered with their leaves stiff in the wind. As if the mountains were in danger of crumbling away and the oceans were as barren as the farthest desert. He looked around trying to make sense of the news he was hearing. There was no possible way, no possible way that the words coming out of Uther’s mouth were the truth. There was no way that the tale he had spun could be true. It was as improbable as the oceans drying that his dearest friend Gaius could be dead.

It wasn’t even plausible for this to be some sick joke. A sick joke was telling him that he got drunk the night before and passed out but not before bedding the unfortunate looking girl from the kitchens. A sick joke would be telling him that he had thrown himself at Uther’s feet, begging him to discipline him. These were jokes, the lies that the king spoke: were not.
He looked to Arthur for the reveal, the sick reveal that would tell him that Uther was just testing his meddle. He looked, pleaded, and begged Arthur to tell him the truth. But Arthur just stood there with that helpless look that told him the truth. He had only seen this look once, when Gwen’s father had been killed. He had been standing in Merlin’s doorway when he awkwardly tried to comfort her with the only thing he could offer: security. Now the tables were turned and Merlin stood frozen in the Great Hall, Arthur babbling nervously about the fact that Merlin was welcome to stay in the castle and continue his work. He couldn’t believe it. He actually couldn’t accept that this was really happening. It didn’t seem real, in fact it seemed humorous. It was actually funny that he didn’t have the answers, that he couldn’t do anything but stand helplessly in front of these two great men. He let out a strangled laugh. At first it sounded like a cough, and then it grew. It echoed in his chest and escaped from his mouth. He was soon overcome with laughter. He rocked awkwardly back and forth, his feet still stuck to the floor but the peels of laughter that escaped forced his body away from his chest.

Arthur stood in front of him looking horrified. He couldn’t figure out why Merlin would be laughing after receiving the news of his mentor’s death. Merlin was always the strong one; the one who stood behind him and whispered words of encouragement when he was at his lowest. The man laughing crazily in front of him wasn’t the same one that put his life on the line for Arthur. He was suddenly older, wilder and dangerous.

As Arthur slowly distanced himself from his manservant Uther looked on somberly. After decades on the battle field Uther knew this look. He knew what it felt like to suddenly find the dark so appealing, the macabre strangely humorous. Although Arthur couldn’t imagine what that felt like Uther knew it was only a matter of time until Arthur was standing in front of him, a sick smile on his face. Uther frowned at the young man in front of him. When he looked at him he saw the face of his closest friend. He heard his voice in his head and he did the only thing a king could do, he laughed.
