As far as I'm aware, tents were only used in situations like... battlefields and so on, not in your everyday camping variety like we use today. I only really know about later!Mediaeval-style stuff, not the Arthurian era though :/
Just... say... *cough* *trying not to give too much away* they were... going off in some epic adventure which involved staying in a lot of woods, would then they be 'camping out'?
I guess if it was an 'official' epic adventure then they'd possibly have some kind of tent, but most mediaeval travellers just slept out under the stars. As Arthur is royalty he'd probably be more likely to have shelter. Hm *researches* Barring the posher marquee-style of tent like this (I'm not sure if this style would fit with the period but it looks similar to what Lady Helen used - but only she had the tent, her guards didn't) they could try for something like a Norman Saxon wedge-style tent which is pretty simple and easy to make, relatively good protection from rain and so on even if it doesn't officially fit with the period.
In my research I came across something on Welsh tents... this might be of merit:
Literary references in Welsh to tents suggest a different picture: that they were used when large numbers of people had to be sheltered and when the travelers could expect to be met with hostility -- specifically during wartime. but most of these are dated from like... the 1400s and later, not in the 5th/6th Century which
( ... )
Yeah there would have been tent-style things, like canvas/leather even felt depend on where you are, and the structure could be wood for the temporary tents to bone for summer tents like nomadic people. So yes, tents of varying styles :)
On most of the comms I write on, I try really hard to make sure I know what I'm talking about, but I guess the great thing about this one is you really don't have to, because the producers don't ! Thanks for the info you gave.
I don't know if it was called a tent per say but they had 'shelters'. Or like lavvyan said about Lady Helena, but I think it was a pavilion in Valiant.
Just consider that in the show they have food that came originally from america a thousands of year later, so you know, if the writers don't care for being exact why should you!

And hey, Lady Helen had a tent. And I think there was at least one in Valiant.
