Merlin could feel the fabric of Arthur's tunic digging into his wound. And it felt like having Arthur there, offering protection and comfort, even as Merlin poisoned his sister.
As he lowered Morgana to the ground, he found himself hoping, for just an instant, that the cut on his arm would grow infected.
He never told Gaius about his "first battle wound." He'd simply had a lot on his mind.
But as he swung the Idirsholas knight's sword at the dragon's chain, the movement causing his cut to sting, he wondered briefly if the world be a more peaceful place if infection were to lead to fever.
Merlin could feel the fabric of Arthur's tunic digging into his wound as metal clanged against metal.
And it felt like Arthur. Protecting him. Trusting him. Even as Merlin destoyed his kingdom.
And as his magic, against his will, drew his wound back together, Merlin resigned himself to a world without peace.
A fair trade, he supposed, for having Arthur at his side.
