Because the Writer's Block posts HATE ME and never show my answer, I gave up and copied it into a normal post. :)
Who is your favorite TV character of all time? Why did s/he make such a big impact on you? Do you collect any memorabilia? Did s/he inspire you creatively in any way?
Ooooh there are so many TV characters I've grown with and loved. I most definitely have a top... four. *innocent smile* I may have a quick ramble about all the characters I've met, grown with, loved and sadly said goodbye to at times. Then I promise to pick my favourite... probably.
1) Donatello Hamato
That's right, we're hoping back to the 1980's, the decade before I was even born, to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, had, or should have, their favourite mutant turtle. My two big brothers were partial to Michelangelo, and Raphael, being the utter boys that they are, and for a long time I too held a soft spot for Mikey. However, just as my brother's discovered that Donatello's bo was invaluable in the TMNT NES game, I discovered the brainiac's sarcasm, need for knowledge, and general uniqueness to be just as fascinating. Since then I've had an affinity with the smartest turtle, and though I don't claim to be a genius who can build plasma drills out of junkyard refuse, I like to think Donnie and I have our similarities. I followed Donatello through the 80's cartoon (both on video cassette - and wow, has it been that long? - and youtube) through to the 2003 cartoon which I always watched without fail, and even gave the FastForward and Back To The Sewers (BTTS for all the turtle fans) a shot, though the latter two were severely lacking. Even now, a good 11 years on from when I first met the turtles at the tender age of 5, I still hold a soft spot for Donatello. He drives my love of academia and witty one-liners, and probably always will.
2) Merlin Emrys
Skip forward now to 2008 where the shiny new series Merlin made it's debut onto the tellybox. I had an odd start with this program, for the first three episodes i managed to tune in to BBC1 at precisely the right time, though never on purpose. It was only when I glanced up from my laptop and saw a rather unrealistic dragon with a voice deeper than the Marianas Trench (such a geography nerd) that I started to pay attention. From there I was hooked. My friends soon lost interest but I marched on with the show, and when the season ended I frantically searched the interweb for more. This was how I found the wonder of livejournal and my most frequent haunt, the MerlinxArthur community. This show officially made me a slasher. Hell yeah. XD And even better, my new found love of slash led me to find one of my best friends in the world, Chloe, who I now chat to every day. Season 2 dawned, and with Chloe I moaned, ranted and squeed through the lot. Colin's ears were magnificent as always, and despite Bradley's more obvious action-hero hotness, I of course, fell for the nerd. Colin's looks and Merlin's adorkable personality combined to make... well, a mess, but a mess that once again I related to. I'm happy to announce to anyone who hadn't heard that even as I type Season 3 of the show is being filmed in Pierre-fonds, and I'll soon get my next fix on lanky, pale, eary goodness. :D
3) Ianto Jones
Ianto of Torchwood. He fights aliens, makes coffee, looks good in a suit, and does it all while sounding deliciously Welsh. Despite only tuning in on Season 3, Children of Earth, I instantly loved his sarcastic but caring, witty character, and cried when we reached his gorgeous death scene. Deciding this simply wouldn't do, I again scurried away to livejournal and read my fill of Janto goodness, and was delighted when Chloe sent me a link to all the episodes (which I still haven't watched, bad Georgia!). Ianto didn't affect my life massively, but his wonderful character is a firm favourite, and has led to my utter obsession with the Welsh accent and language. Plus... has anyone else noticed how cute his nose is? ...Just me? ...*hides in a corner*
4) Kurt Hummel
Finally we reach the last, and most recent, of my top four. Kurt Hummel is your average teenager (and for once the guy who plays him, Chris Colfer, is actually a teenager!) who just so happens to be gay. Now, while I myself am not gay, I am a bit of an outcast with a loyal band of friends who are equally as socially inept. So Kurt and I instantly hit it off as I watched him struggle with high school life and unattainable crushes. Yet again he was a victim to my inner slasher, who happily glomped onto the prospect of Finn/Kurt and doesn't want to let go, no matter how many times I've told her it'll only end in heartbreak. Kurt has affected my life in a way my other favourites have not, he directly affected how I act as a person. Kurt's self-confident personality has lead me to sit up straight and appreciate how damn awesome I really am, and let the hurtful comments and crude (badly phrased) remarks that go hand-in-hand with high school roll of my back. While his love of fashion has only rubbed off on me to a degree (that is to say, I buy more clothes now but haven't a clue who any designers are) it's more his attitude that has changed me. I'm more confident, sassy, and driven to get what I want (or as the Glee kids would phrase it, 'get the hell out of this town'). And best of all, I get to watch someone go through the exact same crap as I have to deal with every day. Though it is only a sit-com, sometimes seeing everything work out is exactly what you need.
...and at least I never get a slushy to the face. ^_^
5) The Big Decision
...is not as tough as I thought it would be. Though I love all these characters dearly, and there was a bit of an inner tussle between Kurt and Merlin, I have to go with Merlin. He's made me proud of my sticky out ears, led me to a fascinating world of books on medieval history, ignited my passion for slash, and most importantly, led me to some of the greatest friends I have, Chloe and Dani. Here's to many more seasons for Merlin and Glee, never-ending reruns of the first two seasons of Torchwood, and hopefully a new and much better remake of TMNT.
~End.
