Wolves Can’t Make Snow Angels

Bran woke with a sleepy growl when his little sister Alana kicked him hard in the ribs. Still pleasantly warm and fuzzy with sleep Bran rolled over to nuzzle into his father’s warm black fur and the steady rise and fall of his dad’s tummy was slowly lulling Bran back to sleep. But now Alana was squirming beside Bran and her little claws scratched at the fine soft fur of his belly. Bran leapt to his paws, ready to snap at Alana’s tail, but a sharp gust of cold air stopped him short.

Peeking over his Dad to the mouth of their cramped cave Bran saw something amazing! Fat clusters of white were fluttering down from the cloudy sky and coating everything they passed. Ever eager to explore Bran scrambled gracelessly over his Dad and next his tawny furred Father who was curled against Dad, blocking the icy chill. Bran shivered slightly but the white stuff was sparkling and Bran simply couldn’t resist anything sparkly.

Just as he lifted a paw, ready to set out on his epic quest, Bran felt strong teeth catch him by his scruff, and his feet kicked helplessly in the air as his Father deposited him back in his spot between his brothers and sisters with a stern glare. Bran sighed and curled up against Alana who had begun shivering without him. His quest would have to wait until morning.

Arthur snorted cheerfully, and buried his nose into Merlin’s silky warm fur. They were certainly in for a busy day tomorrow.

The second the sun replaced the moon on the edge of the world Bran was on his feet, tail wiggling madly behind him. The white blanket outside was washed in honey gold from the morning sun and there was so much of it! Much more than Bran had seen last night.

Impatient to start investigating Bran leapt onto his father’s tan back and scrambled for purchase as he began to slump backwards. Once again he was snatched by his scruff but this time by his Dad, who set him on the ground and nudged Bran towards the mouth of the cave with his nose.

Bran exploded out of the cave only to scamper backwards into his Dad’s waiting figure. The white stuff was so cold on the soft pads of Bran’s paws. More timidly this time Bran edged forwards and went cross eyed as he followed a falling clump of white which landed on his nose. Behind him bran could hear his father padding about slowly, but before he could turn Bran was covered in the cold white stuff!

At that moment Arthur trotted outside, remaining pups in tow, to see Merlin golden eyed and mischievous sitting next to what appeared to be a pup made of snow. Brolin bravely approached the snow pup and licked its cold white nose, revealing a snuffly black one in it’s place! With a might shake that sent snow spattering over everyone Bran broke free and yelped accusingly at his Dad. Merlin licked Bran’s head apologetically, but was only really forgiven when Arthur leapt upon Merlin and sent him crashing into a mound of snow!

About to retaliate, Merlin stopped dead as he heard voices. From the prick of his ears Merlin could tell Arthur had heard it too.

Humans.

Merlin herded the pups behind him and crouched low under a snow crusted bush while Arthur stood ready to attack. But then a group of three young children, decked in thick wooly clothes humans were so prone to wearing, walked into sight and gasped excitedly at the wolf family.

One of the children, a girl with dark red plaits poking out from under her knitted hat and freckles all over her face, knelt on the freezing floor and stretched out a gloved hand towards Arthur. Arthur growled suspiciously, paws planted wide on the ground and claws scratching lines into the crisp snow. One of the boys, this time, tried to pull the girl away but she shook him off and smiled hopefully at Arthur. Arthur only continued to growl.

Rolling his eyes Merlin ambled past his grumbling dolt of a partner and edged closer and closer to the freckled girl. She grinned and shuffled closer, one eye always on Arthur who was practically glaring at the poor girl. Merlin reached her palm and sniffed at the fuzzy cotton gloves before he nudged his head against her hand and she giggled as she petted him.

The pups took this as a green light and scurried forward to be fussed over too, while Arthur just slumped in defeat at his lover’s smug stare. Soon the children were playing together, throwing balls of the snow at each other and crowing victoriously whenever they hit one another. The pups, eager to join in, started kicking snow at each other, and Faolan and Seren, the tallest pups, even jumped about trying to catch the children’s snowballs.

It was while the children were making snow angels - and the pups rolled around on the ground, making shapeless hollows rather than angels but having fun nonetheless - that Merlin realised Arthur was missing. This put Merlin on edge but Arthur was the strongest wolf Merlin knew, and he be damned if he left his pups alone and vulnerable. So Merlin joined in with the children’s newest game, making a snowman while the pups ran about trying to find the biggest rocks and carrying them back to the children in their jaws.

Finally as the sun began to set the children petted the pups and Merlin goodbye and returned home, and Merlin led his pups back into their warm cave. He could already hear them snuffling and sneezing, and if that wasn’t enough every time he head a sneeze Merlin would see a stream of brightly coloured sparks rocket across the cave.

It was the middle of the night before Arthur returned, and curled up beside Merlin on the other side of their sleeping sniffling pups, a branch of dark green leaves with white berried clutched between his teeth. Arthur looked at Merlin hopefully, ears flopping forward in what Merlin supposed was meant to be a cute gesture.

Merlin rumbled happily in his throat and nuzzled against Arthur snowy muzzle, and felt Arthur tongue lap gently near Merlin’s whiskers. They fell asleep like that, curled together around their pups, with the mistletoe left close to their heads as another blanket snow fell outside.
