Summary: There was one reason that trumped all the others.
ONE REASON
There were at least five good reasons why Merlin and Arthur shouldn’t be together. In fact, each of them could probably come up with five reasons of their own, with none of them overlapping the other’s. At the top of Merlin’s list would be that Arthur was an arrogant bastard who often said careless and hurtful things. Headlining Arthur’s list would be that Merlin was an idealist who always expected too much of him and from him.
But none of these reasons really mattered. Because there was one reason that trumped them all; one reason that had kept them together and would keep them together forever.
The pregnancy hadn’t been easy for either of them. Arthur had suffered ridicule and shunning from his friends and co-workers and had been disowned by his father. And Merlin...Merlin had almost died, the only things that had saved him and the baby were his stubbornness and his magic. But at the end of it all - through the ridicule, the disowning , the near death - there had been this perfect, regal, angelic bundle - a baby girl who had been named Emrysse Pendragon.
They had stayed together not for the sake of their daughter but because she was the very expression of their commitment, loyalty, and love. And that beat out any arguments over clashing personalities, past transgressions, or who said what to whom. It was Emrysse who reminded Merlin that he loved Arthur beyond any sense and who reminded Arthur that he would die for Merlin any day. Emrysse - who looked so much like Merlin and was already cocky and arrogant like Arthur - was the one reason that trumped all the other reasons.
And maybe, just maybe, one reason was all they needed.
