I've received the following query via the Merlin Locations website... and I know many of you are far more knowledgeable than me about all things horse-related.

Query: I would very much like to know what breed of horses are used in the show. They are breath taking.

From my bits of research, and a long time working with horses, I hope the following is useful (and accurate).

I believe that most of the horses used, especially in France, appear to be Andalusians (also known as Spanish, or PRE). Some of the UK stables that supply horses also use some Section D Welsh Cobs, which are a similar build and size. Andalusians are particular good for this kind of work as they are very intelligent, and generally have excellent dispositions (my mother still rides my Andalusian mare).

There are also a few European warmbloods of various bloodlines and some Cleveland Bays and crossbreeds, but I couldn't give you a specific list.

Hope that helps. I know that some of the known stables / providers have some online listings of the horses used, but as the filming swaps between France and the UK, there are different horses used for the same scenes (which leads to some interesting changes and continuity issues).
