Hello! I am back home again now. :-D I had a fun trip, and of course didn't manage to do half as much as I wanted. However! Seeing as we had fun yesterday with looking at the Neath Abbey location for some lovely promotional shots, I thought I'd do the same today with Caerphilly Castle. And then later on, I promise: serious posts about proper filming locations. No, really.
So the lovely promotional shots we're looking at today are of Arthur and Merlin on what appears to be a ruined wall. What it really is, is the remains of a tower from the north-east corner of the Inner Ward at Caerphilly Castle...
Here is a snipping from Google Maps, with the location marked with a star...
And here is a photo from The Other Side, i.e. outside the Inner Ward walls. All those enormous lumps of 'conglomerate rock' are basically bits of what used to be a tower! It probably got blownded up as part of the Civil War. I should research that... When I'm done looking at pretties!
Here's a photo from just within the corner of the Inner Ward, looking at the particular bit which was lucky enough to have Colin upon it and Bradley beside... Oh what wouldn't I do to come back in The Next Life as a Welsh castle! You know, during Christmas we were watching a film with Natalie Press (who plays Nikki in Island), and one of her lines was, 'This is my favourite rock!' Mr L just laughed, as if to say, 'How absurd!' But I immediately thought of that rock outside the cave mouth at Porth yr Ogof, the one upon which Merlin sits, and there you go. I have a favourite rock, too.
But I digress!
Here's the beautiful promo shot of Arthur and Merlin... I presume, once again, it's by Nick Briggs. (And of course the image belongs to BBC/Shine, and I found it via the awesome
gealach_ros and Merlin's Keep.)
And here's me attempting to be clever! But I pretty much failed, which is sad, seeing as how I was really deliberately trying this time... :-) Obviously if the boys had really been there, I would have fallen to my knees and gotten the right angle. But again, there's also something about the perspective which I attribute to a different lens... Real camera!geeks may be able to fill me in.
Basically, I planted Merlin's feet in the right place, and then adjusted the overall size. Other things don't quite line up, but you'll get the idea.
Another shot from me...
Another attempt at cleverness...
A beautiful promo shot of Merlin. (Image belongs to BBC/Shine, found via

Cleverness... The column to his left, his hand and his foot are all properly aligned.
Now I'm sure you're all fretting, like me, thinking that Colin could have twisted his pretty little ankle or indeed broken something precious, what with all this clambering about on old ruins... Lucky that Bradley was there to save him, really! But here's the secret of how he got up there in the first place... The bit of tower that he's on is actually still in its original situ, and was part of a stairwell. So he climbed up these very stairs!
As did I... Climb them, I mean. And here's a completely gratuitous shot of where he sat!
These are my favourite Merlin Locations of all, of course - places where Colin's neat little rear has been. Usually, I go put my rather less neat one there, too. But you know, I thought I'd give global warming a break today. Just doing my little bit to save the world! Plus I didn't have Bradley to catch me if I fell... :-(
I hope you enjoyed that little excursion into Locations Trivia! I'll be back soon with actual serious stuff. I promise! ♥
