locations: The Changeling

Woot! I am just loving the show's use of locations in ep 306 The Changeling. Somehow it makes the Merlinverse seem all the more real and solid when they revisit places we already know and love.

♦ But first to somewhere sort of new and sort of not... The exterior of Princess Elena's castle was Castell Coch, just north of Cardiff. The show has used the woods just beside the carpark before, but this is the first time they've used the Castell itself. And the Castell is also where Bradley was interviewed with a guacamole picnic - so, by my count, the Castell is now a Merlin Location four times over. :-) And that's not even counting Three Bears Cave, which is a little way up the road.

The establishing shot of Elena's castle was the Castell, multipled like mad using CGI. :-D And Elena's bedroom was a set, as you can see at Paul Cripps' blog.

♦ When Elena and Arthur go out riding, and Arthur presents Elena with a rose, they are at the River Ely near Miskin, which we last saw in ep 204 Lancelot and Guinevere. In that episode, the river featured as The Stream where Merlin and Arthur wash their faces after braving the Wilddeoren and travelling through the Tunnels of Andor. I guess it's safe to assume the two scenes aren't meant to be set in the same location in the Merlinverse! Locations Detective pakafe  was lucky enough to be at the river while they were filming these scenes! ♥

♦ And then of course we return with Grunehilde to Speech House Lake which was standing in for Avalon, as previously seen in ep 107 The Gates of Avalon. Hurrah!
