The Tempest revisited...

Aug 11, 2013 21:24

My mate Shell had a spare ticket for the matinee of The Tempest today and asked me to join her, so we agreed to meet there. It was only when I arrived that I found Colin was unavailable due to illness, and wouldn't be playing either of the two shows today. Given that Shell and I both had to travel, and her further than me, I don't think we'd have ( Read more... )

I loved being a groundling and will probably always do that when I go to the Globe - just because of the experience. Sorry to hear that Colin is ill. I'm sure he'd go through with it if he could.

Glad to hear Matthew did a good job.

Next time I go, I shall be really torn as to where to sit or stand! I think the lower gallery is probably the best overall experience, but then I loved my one time in the middle gallery, as it was a great 'overview' of the stage. There's no denying the special direct involvement of being a groundling, though... Loved it all!

Matthew was the quintessential trouper. :-)

I'm so glad I went! Matthew Raymond, Roger Allam, and the attendant spirits really went all out to meet the challenge. Quite astonishing when they would have only had that morning to work it out and rehearse... Consummate troupers! :-)

I do remember the actor who was our guide for the tour of the Globe last fall mentioning that they don't have understudies, but I had no idea that "reading the part" is so very literal. I am glad to hear that the actor reading the part did so with such aplomb on such short notice. But, oh dear, Colin has repeatedly proven his dedication to his craft, so for him to call in sick you know it must be dire. Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery!

Hee! Yes, there I was thinking that 'reading' the part was an odd way of putting it... kind of like 'reading' a subject at university! But so it was. :-)

It felt like rather a privilege to witness everyone else rising to the challenge and being such troupers. Luckily I didn't get TOO distracted by William Mannering announcing that Colin was 'in his bed', and asking us to wish him well... :-D

Odd that Colin has missed two performances after appearing to fans yesterday morning after the midnight matinee. I hope whatever is wrong is fixed quickly.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the day's improvisations. I too felt that I would maybe stay away if I knew that the cast had changed, however that wouldn't be right because the whole is much greater than the part. So even if problems persist I'll be there on the 18th from Manchester.

I'll admit that at first I had a bit of a sulk about not seeing Colin again, but ultimately I felt privileged to have witnessed the whole team pulling together and making the most of a sorry situation. I am sure you'll enjoy the play on the 18th, no matter which configuration of cast you see! But here's hoping Colin is well enough to return just as soon as possible. ♥

Yes, let's keep sending those healthy vibes in Colin's direction! :-) Though I really did end up feeling I didn't miss out at all - it was a privilege to watch the rest of the cast carry on regardless, and raise the bar, too.

Oh, thank you! I didn't know you took a photo of me. :-D That's very kind of you. If you could send it to julie@merlinlocations.com I'd really appreciate it! {hugs}
