They were days away from Camelot, but Merlin could swear that he could still hear the screams, smell the fire burning the city, see the white walls of the castle turning black. Gritting his teeth, he poked the fire and watched Arthur sweat his way through the fever caused by his wound.
It wasn't supposed to be this way. None of the prophecies had ever spoke of Morgana seizing Camelot, of Arthur being almost mortally wounded.
Maybe it was because of that stupid argument? Well, it had seemed stupid at the time, but in the months that followed, a distance had grown between them.
Arthur sucked in a breath. "M-merlin?" he coughed.
Merlin blinked. It had been a long time since Arthur had recognized Merlin or what had happened; he rushed over and swallowed. "Arthur?"
Arthur half smiled. "There you are. Useless you may be, but always there for me. Aren't you?"
"Always," Merlin promised.
Arthur coughed. "Tell me--what happened?"
"In time," Merlin told him. He lifted the cloth from Arthur's wound, pleased to some some healing. "Let's get you through this fever first."
"And then we take back Camelot," Arthur swore.
"We?"
"We, Merlin. You and I."
Maybe not all was lost. Merlin set to cleaning Arthur's wound and cleaning the cloth that covered it with a smile.

(let me expand (maybe, you don't have to use this): gwen and elyan are from d12 and they're very poor and they both take tessarae for their family and end up being reaped and then maybe arthur and morgana and gwaine are careers and merlin is from d4 and he's the sort of devious, cunning, plotting person who wants to basically tag along with everyone and get help while he needs it and then kill them all and win and lancelot is the charming finnick-type dude who gets all the sponsors but wants to find a way to keep them all alive, idk that's what i see, you don't have to listen to me)
